I want to use an in-wall iPad mini as a user interface for a home control system.

My plan is to lock the system into Kiosk mode locked to the home control system app, and set the screen sleep to never. The iPad will be constantly powered. iOS has a provision for this in terms of battery management.

My concern is that at night the Kiosk mode app will still be on with the screen at full brightness, this is to be installed in a residential setting so a full bright screen would be jarring.

I could set the screen sleep to after 2 minutes, but wouldnt want this during the day.

Is there i way i could set different screen sleep options at the day and at night. eg.

- screen sleep between 8am-10pm = never
- screen sleep between 10pm-8am = after 2 minutes

It's been eons since I've laid eyes on an iPad. I honestly don't know why they still make them, but that's another conversation.

However, on my iPhone in the brightness settings you can set the light and dark settings... For example, after sunset the screen rather than being white, is dark.

You can also set up custom schedules on it.

Since an iPad is just a big iPhone without the ability to make a phone call, maybe that scenario could work?

Other than that, I've got nothing.

In Shortcuts, create 2 new shortcuts.

1st to make display brightness to 0% (Or whatever for nighttime level). And 2nd to 50%(or whatever you want for daytime level).

Then in the Home app create two new Automations.

1st will be for the darker level and the 2nd for the brighter level. You can set them for either a time of the day and it’ll be the same time throughout the year. Or you can set it at sunset/sunrise or even a certain amount of time before/after the sunset or rise. Note if you want to schedule a certain amount of time before or after sunset/rise. You’ll have to tab the i button on the right after selecting the sunset/rise.

You can also do the Dark or Light Mode the way Hasbeen said in the Settings app. Or you could also schedule it the same way as I described the brightness percentage with the certain amount of time before/after sunset/rise as well. Or same time of the day year round.

I am guessing because 50 million people a year buy them? Maybe I am wrong about that.....

I'm sure...I just don't get them.  But I do notice my kids rarely touch a computer, whereas it's my preferred device.

And when I look at Analytics, I always think....They're selling them...why aren't people using them?

These are 2 different accounts.  Maybe if the target was younger these numbers would skew more toward tablets?

Yeah....I have a iPhone 11 now so screen size is less of a issue as it was in the past....I had a early generation mini that busted and just have not replaced it....i did get a surface laptop which is probably a big reason why.

I use my iPad for my QSC mixer. Love standing next to the vocalist on stage and asking what else they want in the monitor and not having to holler...

A $329 iPad (frequently on sale for $249) and a Brydge keyboard provides a much better user experience than a crappy $400 laptop and does everything that 90% of people need to do on a computer. As for your analytics, Safari on iPad reports as a desktop browser so it's unlikely that those stats reflect the actual number of iPad users.

Think what it was like in the good old days. You'd have a rack or two of equipment loaded with equalizers, compressors, delay, limiters, etc. that you'd need to patch together, manage, and transport. Now you can throw all of this stuff under an arm. And one of the best parts is you can easily save the settings for tomorrow's show and recall settings for the next act.

Amen to that. And when the singer is on a wireless mic, you can stand next to them in the hall and massage eq and compression; when the band is using in ears, they can adjust their own mixes only. Saving shows makes a huge difference as well, especially in a multi act show.
