Hi,

I have a client whose wife is a personal trainer. Normally she visits people in their homes to train them, but obviously with the advent of Covid19 this is now not possible.

She has tried setting up one to one VC sessions (Zoom based I think), initiated from her iPad tablet so that she can train clients remotely by getting them to follow her exercise routine live from her own gym room. The issue she is having apparently is that it is difficult to get the tablet camera to show the views she wants. I presume that part of the issue is she cant locate the tablet far enough away to get the picture and still hear her/their voice.

The client has asked if it is possible for a cost effective solution can be found whereby an external camera, possibly tripod mounted, could be used so that she can let clients see how she performs the whole exercise yet would tie in with the tablet App.

To me this seems more like a job for a professional VC hardware system, but they do not want to spend that sort of money. Once the Corona thing goes away she will return to home visits so they do not see it as a viable business investment.

I have suggested just filming routines with a GoPro, and sharing the video during a Zoom/or similar session, but she wants to have a two-way interactive session as it is more personal to the client, which I can understand.

I don't know of any obvious solutions to this other than installing a pro VC system, and my Googling has not turned up anything that appears to fit the bill.

The room is approx 4m wide by 6M long.

I don't know if it helps, but we do already have a Sony 43" Smart TV in the room,  (i.e. possibly an App available that my be of use?).

I thought therefore I would ask if anyone in the RC collective have any ideas as to how or if this can be done?

What do you mean you wanted it on the other wall - couldn't you have mentioned this when we prewired?

Look into Facebook Live- I know someone who is a working musician and he did a show from his living room last Friday. In his case, it's paid admission but if your client charges for each session, it would work the same way- he had his Venmo and PayPal account info in the background.

Lots of education is done over Skype, too- some feeds are a bit more prone to buffering, but this one should work for her if she needs it to be interactive.

Thanks Highfigh...do you know if either of those allow the App to use a remote camera?

I guess the ideal would be some wireless headphones/mic (i.e. earbuds?) and an IP cam that can be used by the App instead of built-in cam/mic/spkr....

Could the solution be as simple as a tripod and tripod mount for for the iPad plus a quality wide angle lens for the iPad?

Several companies make high quality wide angle lenses for iPhone/iPad for around $100.

Might be easier to position an iPhone vs. iPad.

Air Play the iPad and or use a Bluetooth device that can secured to her ear that won’t fall out/off.

Thanks KOT, I may be being a bit dumb here, but how does that address the video camera issue? Have I missed something?

My .02.

You can't do this "cheap" using your own platform..for example your own website.  The bandwidth required would chew through your profits very quickly.

If I was doing this, I'd choose YouTube Live over Facebook Live.  That's my opinion, I just think it's a better platform for this sort of thing. Facebook live for the most part can be sketchy as far as quality.  IME Youtube performs better.

She could also mark up the page a little better, save the videos, so that clients could come back to them later.

HOWEVER....if she chooses YOUTUBE, tell her to sign up now... It takes 24 hours to activate the streaming account.

With Youtube live, she can have multiple camera angles directly through YouTube all she needs to do is sign into the live stream with multiple devices (Up to 6)

Then all you need is a RODE iPhone microphone and you're off to the races.

I'd forwarn her...This is not something that you just sign into 5 minutes before you're about to do it.  Sign in and check it out for a coupe of days.

That's your easiest way...She's only limited by the amount of Tripods and devices she owns.

Not to mention, Google owns Youtube..so Youtube is a search engine.

What’s the budget?

A NUC pc plus a USB camera would do the trick. Tie the pc audio out into a sound system.

Now all you need is a mic solution. What type is up for debate/preference.

I don't know but Skype can be done using a computer, so I assume a different one (or a mixed AV signal) would work via USB. Fred would be a better person to ask.

I could be wrong, but the person I know who did the live shows on the last two Fridays may have used an iPad, but I'll ask.

On FB Live, people can leave comments in real time and the presenter is able to read/respond to them. I know a musician who has been using that to get his music out there and communicate with his fans- sound isn't amazing, but it's clear and decent.

Well the comment was "we don't want to spend thousands, we are looking for something in the hundreds...."

Which from the way it was said, seemed to me like code for "whilst £999 is technically less than a thousand, what we really mean is £200-£300"

I really just need to hit them with some options and see what they are comfortable with!

I received a message from the guy who has been doing live gigs- he uses a MEVO Live Streaming camera- they start around $299.

Thanks Highfigh, I'll take a look at this - seems to fit the budget at least!
