This showed up on the OSD of a Denon receiver under input assignments where the name of the input usually is.

Waiting for Denon support to call me back...

Ant ideas? Google search turned up very little info.

I recently replaced a couple of my own Denon receivers and noticed the same thing. I have a 4x4 matrix and both receivers showed up with the same label after powering up. Both were connected to the same DirecTV Genie. I’m not 100% sure, but it appears they read data from HDMI (EDID, maybe?) and automagically renamed themselves. Either that or Denon has a database and changes the name. The receivers also changed the Game input name to Xbox when I connected Xboxes.

You can change them back to the standard name in the Input menu.

this happens on the marantz receivers as well.  seems like info is being sent from the directv receivers to the AVRs over the HDMI.  I've seen this happen with Dish Network as well.

the annoying thing is that you can set the name manually, but it will revert back.

I've seen this on both receivers and televisions. For example, I had someone with a cheapie Sharp television and it auto-populated the input names for a Roku and a Fire TV, but not for the Rogers cable box.

AppleTV boxes will pass the "friendly" name you give it to something newer like a Marantz NR1710, but didn't on an older NR1605.

Model information is available over CEC. More and more I'm seeing TV's self label inputs.

buzz,
how accurate are these input names you're seeing?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I'd hate hate to be quoted on this because I don't really have wide experience, but for the model numbers displayed one could fetch the correct control code set. For cable boxes the correct box and channel lineup is typical. This is handy for the TV's voice remote.

Any fix for this?
I bought a Marantz 6015 and it overwrites all names of hdmi devices too.
PS5, Nintendo Switch and Apple TV is ok but my Satellite Receiver is named by STB refsw Design.

Everytime I rename it, it falls back to that hdmi name.

Is this typical behaviour with new marantz av receivers?

Okay, maybe this is just idle curiosity, but what do you mean?
"This" showed up. Okay --

STB showed up? or Refsw? or STB Refsw?
et cetera
