GF lives in an RV. Contract nurse. Slips it at the hospital when on call, at a friends house when not.

I want to install a network in her RV, mainly for TV purposes. Possibly put a Roku in for her. She has a chrome book too that she’d like to mirror to the TV or roku

Thinking about a MiFi hot spot. She has ATT for her cell, and won’t change over to Verizon. I don’t know if any hot spots for ATT exist (I’ll search the web for that shortly)

Anyone have some suggestions that you’ve direct experience with?

The hospital slip provides internet but if she got a hot spot, obviously would not use that provided internet. I’m unsure how robust it is anyway.

The TV is a 25ish” non smart TV installed from the factory. It is a 12v tv so she doesn’t need to turn on her inverter to use it. Would prefer to do that with the Roku too. I guess I’d need a 12v to 5v concert or as I think Roku is 5v

Thanks in advance

We use Mofi on almost all of our boats. They work great.

The travel trailer I’m planning to buy later this year comes standard with these: https://wifiranger.com/
It seems good in theory, but I’ve read mixed reviews, a lot of which come from technology challenged individuals. I’ll give it a try since it comes with the camper, but we’ll see how it goes

If available in your area.  Check out Verizon 5G Home.   It's essentially a 5G router for your home.  Not available in my area yet, but maybe it is in yours.  $50 per month, I think it's added to your mobile bill (if you're with Verizon)

What's the network for?
More devices that will need the Internet?
Multiple Users for the TV system?

If it's just to watch streaming, Chromecast added to the TV is all she needs right now.

Have you ever used mofi with dynamic dns? We are trying to use mofi to demo a crestron system. Even though we have it configured like we should the connection is blocked.

Several companies make LTE/WiFi extenders for RVs. These let you use cell data when you don’t have WiFi, and let you use. WiFi signal where it’s available. So if the sister has WiFi, the wineguard will pick it up and extend it to the RV. At the hospital, if there no WiFi, she can use cell data. You just need. SIM card.

I guess I’m still stuck on her having her own network with a pseudo router and her and own lan, sub net, ip addresses etc. maybe that’s too old school. But to be able to airplay her iPhone or mirror her chromebook to a Roku type device, wouldn’t they both need to be on the same lan? And wouldn’t connecting to a public network (Starbucks; hospital provided WiFi etc) expose her to potential security breaches?

If she had her own ATT hotspot, it would be the firewall and router right?

There is no 5g up here behind the redwood curtain. Not due until 2021 or 2022

Casey it looks like that Wineguard ConnecT can be a hotspot if you add a SIM ?

I believe that’s correct. And I think it may create your own network so it’s like having your own router. But I’m not sure. I’ve never used one. I’ve looked at them in camping world, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten

I’ll look into that further. If it can be a router (issue ip addresses, dhcp, create a lan/subnet, be a firewall etc) that might be ideal. And maybe connect to other WiFi spots when a lan isn’t necessary to save data plan, might be ideal

I’ll also check into John’s MoFi recommendation.

Here’s some more info on RV routers. What you want is cellular and WiFi-WAN. This means it takes the outside WiFi and creates its own network

cellular companies don't give you a private IP unless you pay for a static IP.  so you can use dynamic dns services, but it will just relay to the static ip that you pay for monthly.

if you don't have a private ip, you can't remote into devices on your network.

TP-Link N300 WiFi -> WAN $30.

We put in a basic router for the simple Control4 remote system. And carry with us one of these setup for connecting via WiFi to our phones as the hotspot.

For the novice user, they're cheap enough you could set one up for each of her locations and her phone hotspot, and she would just plug the appropriate one into the router of your choice in the RV. Then she'd be behind whatever firewall etc you provided in the router and on her own 'WiFi'.
