The details are either sketchy or ambiguous.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Seven years... That's my opinion. Product should be fully functional and operational for seven years. That's my opinion.

But I'm not supreme ruler of the world, esp the audio/CE world, so Let's say five years is realistic.

There are original Play 5's, Connects and Connect Amps that will be "stale" at four years.

Weather or not systems work beyond the sunset date, and putting aside any "overreaction" we and our customers are experiencing... Sonos just sent a gigantic red flag up the flagpole... Customers will be leary of spending money on their gear.
I'm Not an engineer, but I play one on TV.
My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

I had thought 5 years was something most had come to accept for source equipment, a long time ago.
Things like TVs, AVRs, control systems, and other major components being 7 to 10 or more years.
And things like dedicated amps, speakers, etc. (things that don't have firmware built in), 10, 15, or more years (or until it dies).

If it wasn't for capitalism (not saying capitalism is bad - but this is one of the parts that creates a bad scenario), we would over build everything still. We would have processors & memory in these devices, that could last 20+ years before they become incapable of running advanced code to do what we want. And we wouldn't have mounds of e-waste killing our planet. But then how would these big corporations make their billions?
And what would we do if not constantly rewiring things and changing components out?

Disagree with the last part. The features they're adding that require all this 'advanced code' aren't things that any of us probably want.

What do customers ALWAYS ask for? "Simple. I just want it to be simple." And Sonos used to be that, when you'd press 2 buttons on one unit and 2 buttons on the other and you were off to the races.

Knowing that Gold went up a few K makes me think "well now I have to do a better job on selling more equipment".

Aaaaaand like that, my signature has taken a small step towards greatness.
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.

I did read on the other forum that some of the affected equipment, might have been sold to dealers as new, over a year past when hardware changes were made.
[Side note]: When URC 'fixed' the OLED screen on the MX780, with LCD replacements; I got sold MX780 remotes still with OLED screens, over 2 years past the hardware change/fix. Was NOT happy about that BS, when I got customer calls a year+ later complaining about the screens.

URC is still replacing MX-780 remotes at no cost, other than shipping to them.

I'm not sure that's still true.  I thought I read that was ending.

Also, URC built the SNP1 and SNP2 and ended support on both after only a few years.  They are paperweights now and cost more than almost any Sonos device.  just sayin'

What has changed on Sonos though to mandate sunsetting older products? What’s the difference in connects made pre 2015 and those after? In the case of URC products, as far as I am aware of, they could always explain the reasons for such actions. For example like when Microsoft changed the way USB devices connect and msc400’s could no longer be updated. It was beyond their control.

Memory. They changed guts in production without changing the model, probably should have changed the model, but people wouldn't have bought old stock by not knowing.

Similar answer we got regarding the Play 3, it's 2 years newer, larger memory chip.

What's changed; sales, competition, their roadmap, streaming services roadmap, stock performance, lawsuit, bleeding money, tariffs, anybody's guess.

URC literally sold me a SNP2 one day, and then discontinued it the very next day.  They wanted to offer me a partial credit to buy a Heos to replace it.

Yes, MX780’s still being replaced, from 2013!

The Mea Culpa email from Patrick Spence just hit my in box...

Doesn't say much new, just nice way of saying sorry for the panic we've caused... And relax, everything's going to be just fine.

Should note, that was directed directly to their clients, the diyers, not dealers. They still don't care about no heads up to dealers.

When does the trade up offer expire?
Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right.
