I predict the future involves selling privacy to those who can afford it.

I have no data to back that up, just an educated guess. It is something I would pay a lot for.

I think it could start with a DVR and the new 1080p D11 Doorbird video door station (not yet available).

Whether or not this particular initiative takes hold, I think it’s a given that standards will settle down and enable the sort of system level and device level interoperability that we all know is possible.

It’s difficult to envision what things will look like when that happens. However, one way or another we have to come to terms with that interoperability and adapt to it.

For that reason, I think it’s useful to look at this specific initiative and what they are trying to accomplish. That will hopefully tip is off as to what the future looks like and how we best can adapt.

To make this more concrete, we can look at ZigBee vs Thread and try to understand what this working group is hoping to accomplish regarding the harmonization of these two competing standards.

Zigbee vs Thread feels to me like Blu-ray vs HD DVD, where there was a war and not any effort for harmonization. So, I’m really puprlexed as to what why the ZigBee Alliance and Google have banded together.
If it's not simple, it's not sufficiently advanced.

I guess it will come down to the one chosen by the porn industry again, eh?

Not worried at all. Know your customers and provide the correct products for them.

These companies will never get together and integrate their products with each other. Just look at Comcast, Verizon, DirecTV, Dish, and many other companies that provide TV service. NONE of one company's equipment will work with another's and they provide the exact same product, TV service.

But Jeff will buy them all, and all will be one (with two day shipping no less).

It is so written.....;-)

LOL. He probably will. I have clients that i put in full control/automation systems and they like them. I also have clients that buy DIY stuff but don't want to set it up/maintain it. I configure /install for them at full labor pricing. It works well for both types of clients
