I have a URC 890 that I programmed a few years ago. I have new equipment in a home theater and would like to have the program edited for the equipment. Where can I find someone experienced with CCP to reprogram my remote? I don't want to spend the hours it would take me to relearn the programming.

2 ways to go about this:

1) Would be to hire a local programmer. If you give us your location, someone here might know someone close to you that's good.

2) Would be to use an off-site programmer. This is sometimes tricky and it really depends on 'what' you are replacing. If you are just replacing some source components with similar popular brands, then it should be easy. If you replacing several components, including the AVR and/or display, then it could be a lot of back & forth.

I'm in the Memphis, TN area. I tried finding a programmer but got someone that was here for 6 hours and accomplished very little. I think he had the hang of it but he had to go to another job. I think it would take him another 6 hours. He was learning as he went. His boss told me no charge but didn't want him to try again.

I have changed my audio processor from a McIntosh MX151 to an MX170. Also Blu Ray player and Sling TV. All my DirectTV functions still work with the remote. If I could find an experienced programmer I think they could do it in a couple of hours.

I don't know of anyone that sells or programs URC remotes in my area or elsewhere.

6 hours? Holy cow, he really was learning for the 1st time. Not something someone should do on a customer's system.

Usually doesn't take more than an hour, for an experienced programmer that's quick and working with familiar equipment. I'm slow as molasses and I usually get a system like that done in less than 2 hours from scratch.

Just to be clear, we are talking about a URC MX-890 correct?

Yes, it is a URC MX890. I have the CCP program, it came from the URC dealer I purchased the remote from.

That's sad.
I could install the equipment AND program the remote in 6 hours!

Are you running IR from the remote (line of sight) or do you have an RF basestation!

I'm using both Ir and RF. I think the RF is like an MX350

See I run into this all the time. The problem is.... for a programmer to warranty their work, all of the equipment, all of the cables, all of the emitter wires, even all of the TV mounting methods must be done cleanly and EXACTLY right, otherwise the remote control cannot do its job exactly right. You could even have the TV fall off the wall just from touching it. Equipment configuration must be gone through and make sure it is correct and will remain set the way you set it. In addition, once all of that is exactly right the remote itself can rarely just be adjusted, it must be completely reprogrammed from the ground up, and that is because the initial programming is done sloppy, with stupid redundancies and things that require more button presses from the user than is necessary.

I learned to NEVER EVER take over a job to just “reprogram” or “adjust” a remote. It just doesn’t work that way. There are even times different wires have to be fished to the TV to do it exactly right and so things are 100% dependable.

So if I get a call like this it will always be time and material and I require the customer to allow me the entire day if need be to do it exactly the way I want to make its reliability as bulletproof as possible, otherwise I don’t touch it or put my name on it.

Even after that there are rare situations where you have done all of this but remote still can’t do its Job exactly right because the customer has went out on his own and purchased a television that does not support discrete commands. Hell you may end up having to replace the TV for the remote to be right!

I sent him a message several days ago. I don't think he knows how to use the RC mail system yet.

The customer will normally chose the TV/monitor they like the best. A TV/Monitor that has discrete code might not be one the customer likes/prefers. It is a fact of life. The customer pays the bill, afterall.

thats a terrible way to see things. they may pay the bill, but that doesnt mean they are right.

As pros, we need to educate them on why the tv's recommend are the right ones. If they are buying a TV based on how good it is, its probably going to have discretes...

But Too many people buy a TV based on price. and cheap TV's rarely have discrete codes.
