What do you guys set up for average residential installations (not a high profile person, etc.). To record only on motion or 24/7? Just curious.
Obviously it depends on how far back you may want to look at previous footage but just trying to get an average installs set up.

Motion based recording also makes it easier to find when something does happen.

We only use recorders that record 24/7 with indexing/bookmarking of motion. In five years we’ve caught the attempted murder of a police officer, several thieves/assaults. And got footage instrumental in apprehending two of our region’s ten most wanted criminals. Just last week one our systems got two car thieves. In EVERY instance, law enforcement asked for much more than a “clip” more like an hour+ of each... shows what the bad guys did, before and after the crime.

In the case of the car thieves last week, the authorities are charging for each car the thief entered, not just the one he stole. The key to those charges? An hour of continuous video. The accomplice was id’d by an arm tattoo in a random clip from outside the building that likely would not have been caught as a clip.

Absolutely/positively 24/7... the mass market camera companies love to show all the clips of people stealing packages etc... but you never see the ones that get missed by cameras that didn’t catch the right time frame... I can trick most doorbell cameras etc. So can thieves, Next to impossible to get past 24/7 recording.
I'm Not an engineer, but I play one on TV.
My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

Some recorders have constant recording at low quality and then jump to high quality when motion is detected.  Best of both worlds.
