We have a customer/friend who is really hanging on to DirecTV, tons of TV's, several generations of boxes. All in all it's a big cluster. He's not a fan of the idea of streaming or waiting for the new ATT TV thing with the IP boxes.
He wants to start from scratch with DirecTV, all new gear, satellite based. I'm trying to come up with an idea if it's even doable. Which brings me to the questions:
With the new Genie 2 (or whatever the latest and greatest is from DirecTV) how many boxes can be supported? Actual TV's with boxes? Simultaneous streams? On wires? On wireless?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm Not an engineer, but I play one on TV. My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

I think its 4 total at any given time.
Dish is wayyyy better than DirecTV.
That is completely wrong!
The new Genie 2 (HS-17) can support 8 TV locations, with 7 streaming at once. That includes 2 4K TV locations.
If you have a system with more than 8 TVs, then you do NOT want to go the Genie2 route. You need to stick with the HR54 setup. The limitation is you will only ever be able to have 1 4K client box active. But you can expand the system to a great number of TVs with conventional receivers (H25, etc.).
I agree however, that only masochist continue to pursue DirecTV services. DishNetwork or the cable company are way better at this point. Or cutting the cord entirely and going with streaming, if you have an internet ISP with high enough speeds and reasonable data caps.
Diehard sport fans are really the ones that suffer these days. They are bound to high price subscriptions with terrible customer service.
Believe me, I'd love to kick DTV to the curb. But the only way this is going to happen is to ween them off of DTV and transition them to something else. I'm just trying can put together a manageable plan with a scaled down DTV system and streaming as a secondary option... The DTV can br disco'd later when they realize streaming is viable.
But until then, we really need to update DTV to something that works as best as it can.

Does this include the wireless models, assume......

I have a client with 8 current receivers with an HS-17 "tower". 5 are connected via co-ax and 3 wireless. He wants to add a wireless for an outdoor system now. Is adding another wireless client an option? If not, are their any options?
Ed, I was always under the impression that 8 clients was the max authorized on a Genie 2 system. I know for a fact the 7 streams at once hard limit limitation.
So are you saying you can authorize up to 11 clients on a Genie 2 system? I was told from DirecTV that they would not authorize more than 8. Would not be the 1st time the idiots on the phone at DirecTV had no clue what they were saying but I have ran into that more than once. So I'm curious if you have installs that have more than 8 clients on a Genie 2 system? Or have you only been told you could do more than 8 but haven't tried it yet?

All this. Directv is utterly clownshoes these days. I get constant complaints about their awful customer service (as with all things AT&T) and the latency in the boxes is getting worse by the day.
Really sad, I am a 20 year customer, former employee and up until the AT&T merger would recommend their service. Not anymore.
I am a trained professional..... Do not attempt this stunt at home.
I have a client with 16 TV's on DirecTV....with a Genie. How are they doing it. I know some are hardwired and some are wireless. We didn't do anything with them other than mount the boxes. Do some of these boxes not have access to the Genie?

You have to read :)
"Genie 2" systems (HS-17) can ONLY have client boxes on the account. And a "Genie 2" can only stream to 7 boxes at a time. The total number of boxes on the account is at least 8 (by everything I have been told and verified) but could be as many as 11 (although I have no idea if Ed has actually seen an install yet with that many).
A regular Genie system (HR-54, -44, -34) can have an unlimited number of boxes. I have many systems out there with dozens of receivers on them.
I had been told 11 by a DirecTv person when I had to phone in something recently. However I just reached out to a guy whom I trust a lot at Solid Signal and he said 8 is the limit for clients on genie 2
