How to get rid of any animal in the world.

1. Shoot it.
2. Trap it.

If you can't shoot it or trap it, remove it's food source.

In your case the food source is bees.  The bees are also doing damage to the structure of your home, you may not be able to see it with your eyes, but they'll destroy those beams from the inside, whereas the woodpecker starts works from the outside.

You might consider it a blessing that the woodpecker is telling you that you have a bee problem.

Get rid of the bugs and you’ll get rid of the woodpeckers.

Get rid of the wood and you'll get rid of the bugs.

A friend of mine had this same problem. When he put an addition onto the rear of his house he removed all of the wood siding on the old part of the house. The entire house is brick now.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wish I could simply blast them out of the sky (they are protected, and I'm also in a residential area). I have partially tackled the bee problem by having the house sprayed, but unfortunately it's not 100%.

I like the idea of a motion activated sprinkler system. Also the suggestion to string up some clear fishing line might help as they only peck at the wood they can reach when sitting on the edge of the roof.

I'm glad my house is brick- I saw a Pileated woodpecker in a tree about 100' away and was amazed by its size- I had never seen one before.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

do what half the restaurants in florida do... fishing line strung up in a grid ... keeps the birds out

This doesn’t do anything for the carpenter bees, but is probably the best solution for the birds.
