I need to find something for a client and need to find a TV, but it doesn't need to be on the bleeding edge. Of course, Spectrum hasn't reached the point of >1080 resolution, but they do have an XBox and AppleTV.

I have looked at the 850 series from Sony, but by comparison, the Samsung looked better and they were almost the same price. Needs to look good with motion- the black, color and contrast looked good on the UN series model, but the Q60 and Q70 definitely looked better. Has anyone spent much time with these and did they suffer from the Soap Opera effect? They aren't vidiots, but I want it to be good enough to last for a few years WRT video quality.

Thanks

Soap opera effect is a video processing that can be turned off.

I personally haven’t looked at anything else the last few years, been using Sony. The 900 series would be the lowest model I’d sell for anything short of a kids room, etc.

I’d take Sony over Samsung. Even with the difference in levels, I think the Sony has better colors

The LG 8670 is pretty f-ing great....lot of processing to upscale lower resolutions to 4K.

I have a 65” XBR and a 75” lg at home and see a 75” Samsung at my parents on a regular basis.
The Sony is the best picture by far and it’s at least a year older than both the Samsung and lg.

I put 3 of the 75” LG’s in a small church yesterday to use for monitors. Felt like such overkill for just displaying song lyrics and short video clips

This is not a personal shot, but a post like this is not at all helpful.

Sony makes at least 4 models of 65" TV with "XBR" in the model number, the best of which costs almost 3 x what the most basic one costs. Samsung and LG also make numerous different qualities of TV. Making a claim that "Sony is better than Samsung and LG" is meaningless without specifying exactly what models were being compared. A top-end Samsung QLED or LG OLED is going to be better than anything Sony makes short of the OLED stuff.

I agree with your post, with the exception about the Sony OLED being the only thing better Sony has. I guess you forgot about the Sony Z series. For HDR performance it beats OLED, simply due to the light output. And it has better color accuracy, gamma tracking, etc. than the Samsung QLED.
I personally like OLED TVs better for overall picture quality however - uniformity, off-axis response, accuracy, etc. (the LG C9 series or Sony A9 series). Despite not having as much HDR impact.

To the original question: at that price point for size, the current Sony X850 series sucks! Do not buy that. The X850 and below line is Sony's throw away lineup and any of the other brands beat them at this price & size.
The Samsung QLED would be a good choice (although I despise Samsung) and the LG 8 series would be a good choice as well (the LG nanocell tech is about the same as Samsung's Qdot).

The TV shootout data just doesn't help here as those TV's are not in the 2K price range.

That’s true, and my intention in posting it was in reply to Brad Humphrey and our side discussion of top-end TV’s.

I looked at that, a Sony, several Samsungs and a Vizio- I saw things that didn't thrill me in the lower priced ones that were less noticeable/objectionable on the more pricey models but I was looking for flaws- I have to wonder if/how much these bother most people who are just watching whatever is on, although motion blur and other artifacts from digital video have to be noticeable to them to some extent.

That’s a fair point. While i don’t feel like looking up each model number right now they are all 4 k led.
The Sony is a middle of the road mode and cost around $1500 a year and a half ago. The Samsung and lg cost around $2500 each dealer.
I’ve also done everything i can to improve the picture on both the Samsung and lg.
Btw the Samsung is by far the worst in this particular group. It looks best when it’s turned off.
