Everyone knows perfectly well the most fundamental aspects of personal economics. If you spend and don't save, then you are screwed when it goes south. And if you spend a lot more than you have you are screwed when it goes south. That's all anyone needed to know to avoid the problem.

The issue is that a lot of "everyone" can't afford to save enough to make a difference. A flat tire will wipe out most americans current savings account.

Everyone knew what Walmart was. It was widely discussed when they started being built. It was in the news a lot. I remember it well. Walmart was successful because people wanted cheap stuff more than they wanted to support mom-n-pop stores. If all of us had continued supporting those mom-n-pop stores, it wouldn't have mattered in the slightest what Warmart did.

The average poor person knows one thing about walmart. It costs less. They dont have the time or money to do anything about it.

The public absolutely has control over what businesses are successful by either doing business with them or not. They clearly chose to do business with Walmart.

You mean the public with the good fortune to decide where they buy their food/goods.

LOL!  Can't even come up with your own reply, you have to plagiarize from successful people.

The outcomes of YOUR life are YOUR decisions Mac.  This Country ain't perfect (but it's pretty G damn good), there are issues and we're all working on the issues but stop blaming everyone and everything about where YOU are at in YOUR life.

Thanks to this great Country, YOU make the decision on the path you take, YOU determine the outcome.  It's not going to be easy but guess what.... it's not supposed to be.  Thanks to those that came before us, at least you have a say in your own future!

Many don't.

Wrong.

That has nothing to do with what he posted.

It actually does as France almost ended in 1940.  However, it was a tongue in cheek way to say I wouldn’t want their military defense.

What’s the emoji for sarcasm again?

I'm impressed that the one or two folks we all expect to have chimed in by now have remained silent rather than throw jet fuel on this dumpster fire. That's progress and thank you.

That "medical system", which is just health care, cost France over $700Billion- how well do you think their economy tolerated that?

Look at where the opioids and other drugs come from and who is the largest consuming country.

The lower 50% of the country averages about $2K/month. They have people working part time, so more are 'employed', but they don't gross as much as a full-time worker.

The murder rate, as in every other crime, is because of the people, not just the weapons. The US has more people, therefore, more murders.

If they have 1/4 the murders, that's a problem because they have 1/5 the US population.

I don't think it would be possible to determine how the economy reacted to the health care costs...but, France spends about 37% less per capita on healthcare than the US does. My assumption is that spending less on anything means that the money is free to be spent elsewhere in the national economy.

I don't understand what point you're trying to make regarding drug usage. My point is that our society is driving people to use truly dangerous drugs at a much higher rate than seems to be the case in France.

I don't understand what point you're trying to make regarding income. My point is that, even though the US has a lower unemployment rate, a lot of the employed people don't actually make enough money to afford much beyond basic necessities. Even adjusted for cost of living, the minimum wage in France has about 27% more "buying power" than what we have in the US.

It seems from your last two points that you misunderstood what "murder rate" means. That's the number of homicides per 1000 people.

Like I said earlier, though: every country has its problems to deal with. There are many, many things that the US does better than many, many countries. But, to put on your star-spangled blinders and ignore the fact that many countries provide a way of life for their citizens that is in many ways better than what we are doing is naive.

Tonight I sat on the tailgate of my truck and ate a tomato that just ripen from the garden. As I sat and listen to Coeur De Pirate (a Canadian-French singer), I thought about how well the French are doing and the type of government they have. How they have been a country for a hell of a lot longer than the US.
Then I thought about all the other old world countries and their forms of government and how they have all been around so much longer than we.

Thinking about things here, it occurred to me how things have been going down hill every generation since the 1950's-70's. My family linage dates back to the Mayflower, long before there was even a country here. They have always been poor and mostly farmers, with the generations just before me in the southern Indiana area.
I found myself wondering if the old saying "This is why we can't have nice things" to be more true than we care to. If all the idiots, zealots, and other slim of society (rich or poor) have now brought it all to an end. That I might actually witness the end of this once great nation in my lifetime (I'm only in my mid 40's now - although I feel so much older these days). And how it will affect what little freedoms I have left.

The moon is full tonight, looks beautiful. And this is a great tasting tomato!

There are weekly riots in france, yellow vests? Ring a bell.

Great spin! Maybe you can get a job as the new White House Press Secretary! You just have to be able to walk and chew your cud at the same time. Like Sarah.

You do know that I've never said any of the things you say that I've said? "nazi sympathizers", "new hitler", "should be killed". Never.

Go back to the thread which I started called "Are You Ready for Business Price Increases?" where ALL I SAID WAS:

"Thanks to the Trump Tax" with a link to the article quoting Gary Shapiro who says "Trump Tax".

By Post #16 "[I'm] a f'ing curse!", and "send David packing".

It's fascinating that any of you think you can justify your behavior. You're all as childish as Trump is. You can dish it out but you can't take anything - especially the truth. f'ing babies, all of you.

I didn't say you said those things. Read the post. I said "you're like".

Their economy would respond to the government over-spending in a similar way to any other, WRT their GDP and inflationary actions. They spend far less than the US does because they don't have our health care insurers, who are the reason our care costs so much and I'm still checking to see if they deny pre-existing conditions- I suspect that they don't, but I could be wrong.

This was an eye-opener, WRT wages- it shows the thresholds for free state-funded medical care: from [Link: expatica.com]

Single-person household: €8,653
Two-person household: €12,980
Three-person household: €15,576
Four-person household: €18,129
Each additional person in a household with more than four people: €3,461 each

EU is $1.12 at the time of writing this- just fewer than 1/8th of the French population is under the poverty level, which means they have about 8 million people living on less than 954 Euro/month. The link also shows that Paris has more poverty than the national average and in some areas, it's in the 40% range.

[Link: borgenproject.org]

I would have to say that they have some serious problems.

How is "our society" driving people to use drugs? Through peer pressure? It's over-prescribing Opiates that's killing people- most new heroin users are those whose prescriptions ran out. That's not societal, that's criminally negligent Doctors. As far as IV drug users- don't kid yourself, they're everywhere.

WRT the murder rate, it's the number that they use for making their point, whether it's per 1000 or 100,000 (most of the data I have seen used 100K). The link below shows that the US rate is almost four times that of France.

[Link: frenchly.us]

Our populations can't be compared- they're too different to be considered 'similar.
