Setting up a six zone Connect system (existing multi ch amp) and as I register the first unit, theres a message that sonos will "soon" no longer support "on this phone/ipad" on their app. You'll have to use airplay, which of course is not supported on the connect..... when did this start? did I miss something?

Hadn't seen that message yet.

Since it's wireless from the device anyway, Airplay and Casting is a logical progression I guess. Instead of supporting a native plugin they have to constantly update for new devices, they can rely on the native phone/tablet support that AirPlay2 and Google Cast offer.

If true, it sounds like a major revamp of the SONOS UI & backend is coming. Wonder what integration it is going to broken *yikes*. Wonder if the new UI & features will be better or worse.

The SONOS Connect is one of the oldest models now. I'm sure with new revamped software, it will probably be discontinued and a new version released (with AirPlay2) - not sure why they didn't do it when they launched the SONOS AMP. Maybe development delays?
Also if true, then probably the PLAYBAR will get discontinued and a new updated version as well.
Play:1 discontinued (should have been with the SONOS ONE).
Then that only leaves the Play:3 - wonder if a replacement will come or just outright discontinue of that series?

I wonder if you will be able to change the lightbulb in the new speaker coming up..? Or if you put a hue bulb in it will it change color to the music?

It’s been “broken” for some time now and the fix was to keep the iDevice from sleeping or locking. I would assume the inability to fix the issue is resulting in killing off the feature.

I really think Airplay 2 is a decent substitute for Sonos now that you can send music to multiple speakers. It would be nice if Airplay 2 speakers could stream directly from the internet instead of streaming from the device. Maybe it does this already, just can't find information about it.

So, since the new AMP has NO line level out, there's no way (once the connect goes away) to set up a system with higher end amps or retro existing systems with multiple amps in place... if you want simple "from my phone " access. Or if you're not an Apple music fan. I know its a small feature, but worrisome that SONOS is doing this. Is it at APPLE's request? I just don't get it. Maybe one day SONOS will decide they don't want to work with APPLE at all and drop all IOS support.. sounds stupid, I know, but this industry has a record of cutting it's own wrists...

Here's the official thread from the Sonos forums...

[Link: en.community.sonos.com]

I'm not a fan of this being removed, but I have noticed that it has become an unreliable way to play music across a host of streaming brands (Sonos / HEOS / MusicCast).
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.

I'm not happy about this.  I am an Android user and worry that the solution will not work well with Android.  I do play music stored on my phone all the time.  The older I get, the more I hate this industry

Android can Cast to SONOS devices already, so why would you need to use Airplay from an Android device?

You are talking to iPhone users. They have no clue there is anything else in the universe, let alone mystical phones that are much better. "No... it can't be"

I read it as Sonos will be removing the "on this phone" source from all devices, not just iOS.  If that is not the case then my previous statement does not apply.
