I am a complete stranger to this potential feature, so please... be gentle.

I've got a customer who is opening a small coffee shop. He wants wi-fi for guests, but doesn't want them to continue to take advantage of it once they leave his business; he's on the 1st floor of a 3 story building with 2nd and 3rd floor all apartments for university students). I know that I can set up wi-fi to operate during business hours. I also can show him how to change his wi-fi periodically to deter rouge usage.

But my question is: Is there a company that sets up a timer of sorts so if someone is on the wi-fi for over 60 minutes (for example), that they are booted off, and would have to re-enter password (or agreement).

I dont know how to pull it off but i know that this feature is available. Hotels do this. You login to their wifi and after 12 or 24 hours you get hit with the login-wall again.

I assume you could hit the user with a pay-wall like "free internet hour for today is up. Enter a credit card for more funny cat videos".

Wouldn’t that just require adjusting the lease time in the router?

Cisco Meraki has this feature built in. It can also be setup that the patrons have to like his business Facebook page. Super simple to setup.

Problem is is cost/yearly licensing.

AP is 400-1200 depending on model and licensing is like $300for 3 years.

Meraki makes it super simple to use this. Ruckus and Aruba also have this feature but it’s a bit more complex to setup.

Who is the ISP? Are you using their router, just the modem or are you providing all of the hardware?

Time-Warner and now, Spectrum do this with their public access networks.

Our plan was to use Spectrum's modem, then use our router and AP. I'm in the planning stages and was looking for options.

You need guest portal management. Lease time isnt going to do anything unless you can manage the time and clients. Otherwise, they just need to reconnect and get a new lease.

Check out Unifi. They have an entire suite of guest management features built into the controller software.
