When we cannot run cabling or have any available, we go with Eero for the ease of install. We have a case where we cannot get wiring in place, but the client uses a VPN, which is not supported on Eero. Not supported meaning it simply will not work, and not just they won't help with issues. So wondering what other options there are, without getting into a frankenstein system. I would like to run our own router, typically Ubiquiti Edgerouter. Its a decent sized house, probably around 6500 square feet.  

I know there are a few mesh options such as Amplifi, Orbi and others. Google Wifi will not work right out of the box being that it does not allow for mesh in bridge mode. Are there other non mesh options that might work well that I should be considering? Since Eero always worked well for us, I never really looked into what else is out there for this type of scenario.

Araknis is supposed to have the ability to put their WAPs into a wireless repeater mode. But I don’t know that anyone does this as well as Eero and Google. Ubiquiti AP’s probably have the same option.

Doesn’t Eero work as just AP’s and let you use your own router, which would solve the VPN issue?

I was just reading that.  I am thinking of going with Unifi in-wall APs though since we do have ethernet ports in the bedrooms.

I thought that was the case in regards to bridge mode but it did not work when we tried it.  This was before I knew of the Eero Plus/encrype.me account Paul mentioned

Ruckus WAPs with your Edgerouter

We have been very pleased with the Uni-Fi HD In-Wall’s. I don’t know today’s stock status, but these units have been in short supply. I’ve also used the older, less expensive model. This works Ok, but the HD units have a better radiation pattern and there can be some issues when using the onboard Ethernet jack on the older units.

Don't ignore the lowly MoCA using RG6 in the house. I've got a client whose house was flipped, and flipping included cutting and removing all data wires in the house. DECA on the DirecTV wiring took care of the entire place -- two stories with a maximum of 60 feet from the router to the furthest needed access point.

No need for moca. We have Ethernet to the same areas there is coax. There is just no way to get a wire for a ceiling mounted unit which is our preferred method of AP installation

One can argue that ceiling mount access point is more potent, but an in-room wall unit is more effective than a potent unit several rooms distant. Also, customers are more likely to aesthetically accept multiple wall units at electrical outlet height, rather than a ceiling unit or two.
