One of my first jobs was during high school, where I was doing cost accounting, and I had to use one those monsters.

I had a math teacher (for four years!) who regularly used a Comptometer. He had two in the classroom, and another plus a hoard of parts, at home. Man, he loved those things.
This was in the days of punch card "computers".

Yes. When I told this math teacher that the punched-out sections of IBM cards would make GREAT confetti, he nearly climbed down my throat with how dangerous that would be, since the paper edges and corners are so sharp. As if to underscore the truth of that some fifty years later, there was a recent internet article about a woman who lost one eye because she got a piece of glitter in it. Nice, sharp little edges....

Why do I get the impression that everything pictured smells like a combo of mildew and cat piss?

Because you don't understand the neutralizing effect of weeks and weeks of sunshine, UV in particular, and rain.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

How's the new gig working out? I'm sure being an alarm flunky fits you quite well...

I’m having to work my way up from wire monkey

Oh man.

Actually it’s been a lot of watching and fetching so far. No one ever trusts the new guy with tools, no matter how much experience. LOL

Today though I did get a basic rundown on crestron, but I think tomorrow I do have to help a wire crew on some lightning protection.
