Missed this the first time I skimmed through the answers. I’m amazed more here aren’t doing this

The issue with this is that a lot of WAPs aren't designed to be mounted onto a device box. For example, we use the Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LR WAP and their mounting plate is smaller than either an octagon ceiling box or a single gang LV plate. So now we are stuck with two options. 1, just hang the wire down and hope the drywallers don't bury it. 2, install a box and then come up with a way to mount the WAP to this box by using blanks and then trying to get the wire out of the box into the exact spot the WAP requires it.

Well that's dumb. Seriously though, companies need to wake up. "Hey there's a standard that everyone uses and would make installation and service a breeze, nah let's do it some other way."

By the way, there is an adapter mount for those things, just $10 a piece, for what other manufacturers include in the box.

Use a metal 4x4 box with a round trim ring, the smaller Ubiquiti bases will fit over these.

Staple a cardboard sheet between the joists, then pull the wire through at the spot you like. Drywallers usually do OK with this. I haven’t had anyone use a ziptool on this arrangement.

This looks great. Any idea if it works with the UAP-AC-LR? The specifications mention other models, but not this one.
If it's not simple, it's not sufficiently advanced.

For $10 order one and see if it fits

I never understood the point of the LR model. I mean, sure, a single wap install it should be fine.

But doing multiples of these and if installed properly (tuning channel and transmit power), you're defeating the purpose of them aren't you?

They don’t just have more powerful transmission (which, as you point out, winds up being turned down), but they have more sensitive antennas, as well. That makes them good for mobile devices.
