Look, the word doesn't even mean a person is phobic. It's is used as a name for feelings and acts hate, not fear.

So why do we have the word at all? Consider:
mis+o+gyny, which is hatred of women, from Latin, ultimately from Greek misogynia.

The complementary word might be misandry, with "andry" refering to men, but it actually refers to husbands, so that's a bad match. Besides, polyandry already has a history as referring not only to men but to women.

There could be misandric, based on mis+andras, the Greek word for man. But they didn't choose that. Instead they decided to be ignorant and use phobic where they meant hatred.

We'd do better not analyze the words too thoroughly, as they were invented by left wingers, who are more interested in expressing emotion than in speaking the truth. And they sure aren't going to work hard to invent a perfect new word!

Now there's a left wing technique: I show that a couple of dictionaries define homophobe as hatred, not fear, and show that one dictionary that does define it as fear also uses completely out of date definitions, and you cannot refute a thing about how correct I am. So you find another dictionary that cites fear as one possible definition. That does not invalidate or in any way address what I said.
