We have a client who wants to connect his projector to a Sonos 5.1 surround setup, with a playbar, 2 play 5 for rear and a sub. Can this be done, and will it be able to pass 5.1?

Thanks.

I've never researched what audio a projector can pass. With TV's this is a documented spec and easy to find when knowing the model number.

Without a model one will never know if the projector even has an audio output and what its processing capabilities can handle.

Haven't done this yet but an upcoming job has something like this proposed:

HDMI switch with optical output; switch video output to projector; switch audio to Playbar.

Do I think that the added ~30ms Sonos delay may be an issue? Yes. I plan to try different picture processing modes on the Projector; maybe I can find one with comparable latency. If not, we wired for regular speakers, too.

Sources?
I'm Not an engineer, but I play one on TV.
My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

Ethereal HDMI switcher with optical extraction. Its going to look weird, but it would work.

Right. Otherwise this just sounds like a Jump to Conclusions game #OfficeSpace

As others have suggested, I did this set up with a Vanco HDMI switch with audio extraction and just rant the optical into a Sonos Playbar with sub and two play 3's for surrounds.

It worked fine - the Playbar does not support 5.1 Dolby so it wasn't an issue.

No problems or complaint with audio delay. They were on a budget so it was controlled with a Harmony Elite.

As long as you can't hear that room from another adding Sonos Zone then its fine with a receiver. Otherwise you will have the delay from the processing of the receiver in that zone vs. other zones.
