What can I use to auto switch a zone 2 amp so that it comes on only when multizone is selected on the main receiver. Receiver: Elite 56txi zone 2 amp Elan Z660. I was thinking of some sort of line level detector that would send a 12volt trigger to a triggered outlet..

If zone 2 is being selected from an IR remote you can use an IR controlled relay from Xantech to trigger the Z660. Amps from Parasound and Sonance will trgger when an audio signal is sensed.

it is being selected via the main receivers remote and the front of the receiver manually.

Anyone familiar with the Xantech AC2. It says it can be switched on when it senses a video signal. The receiver I am using has a multizone video out so I could run the video out to the video in on the AC2 and it would switch the amp on every time I turn on multizone, correct?

only if you are listening to a source with video, CD or Tuner could be a problem.

the z 660 has a 12v trigger to trun it on on the back (mono mini conenction), so whatever system you use (IR, line level sense etc) send it right to the 660, it's the fastest on in the biz since it has to wake up and pump out watts fast to keep up with elans comm controler.

I have 59txi and can set 12v triggers for zone 2 operation does the 56 have the same?

Last thought, leave the amp always on, and make sure at power down (off macro of somesort) to put the zone two of the rcvr to an empty input like cd2 or something, then when the rcvr is turned back on the customer will have to tell it to go to a useful input before it makes any sound in zone 2

The 12v trigger on the 56 gives you selections for input functions (DVD, TV, etc) nothing for zone2.

Why not use an amplifier with an "auto-on" feature. An example is the Sonance 275 amplifier. If you're not a Sonance dealer, Audio-Source also sells several models which are available to anyone. Depending on the size of the amplifier, there are many, many models available from many manufacturers.

Yeah I know, I originally quoted the sonance but the buyer requested the Elan and unfortunately I gave in and said sure without thinking it through.

How about a Niles SAS-1. I think it will do what you want it to.
