The simple cure for people getting upset about our profit is to point out that, in general, furniture sells at two times its cost.

When a furniture store "slashes" its prices by 30%, it's making about what we hope to make on product.

We could go into markup versus margin, but I don't know if that would help customers understand things any more clearly.

Or maybe there's just "the profit on these items is what keeps my doors open. As long as I know your system, I'm the least expensive installer you'll run into because I won't have to spend time figuring out what's there. I won't be here to do that without profit."
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I doubt anyone on this forum is running a Sonos only business.

When people start yapping about profit, I ask if they save money. When they say that they do, I ask if there's any real difference between them saving money and me making a profit- both require spending less than the income. It comes down to "It's more important for you to save a few bucks than for me to stay in business?". They may be able to consider our cost of doing business, but they would be surprised by it.

If I ever hear "Yes" to that question, I'm gonna leave a vapor trail as I leave.

"I will give you a discount when you can get McDonald's to give you a discount"<-- use that when customers want a discount on items that are not on sale.

I wouldn't suggest doing that at all.
Open the McDonalds app on a phone or tablet and you'll find coupons / offers etc.

So, um... yeah.
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.

Coupons and offers aren't the same as a discount. FYI.

From [Link: cepro.com]

“We've been reinvigorating our installed solutions channel with new products and a renewed commitment to the professional installer community,” says Spence.

Don't they say this like every 6 months? I dont actively sell Sonos because they dont integrate and its a dead end street as far as that goes.

If someone asks for SONOS, but I think they will add control I try to move them to HEOS so I have that path to go down later. If they really want it fine by me, I tell them the potential issues and leave it at that.

My only real gripe with SONOS isnt that they dont integrate with us. Thats their prerogative. Its that they keep putting that carrot in front of us. "We are gonna integrate Q1, secret announcement you didnt hear it from me wink wink"

Then the big announcement comes and its we broke all your existing integrations and now allow you to call on favorites! Bow at the greatness that is SONOS!

Piss off.

The beauty of both of these options is they can go in the sh!t can early on with little remorse. Same goes for most video sources now too.

Quick check here -

Does a discount save a customer money, but cost the seller money?
Does a coupon save a customer money, but cost the seller money?
Does an offer save a customer money, but cost the seller money?

Are they all a form of marketing?

I just want to see if we're on the same page, or you're arguing semantics and dropping a passive aggressive 'FYI' at the end of your post?

One of the first Sonos systems I installed was for a very rich client I have been dealing with for almost 20 years.
He was given a Sonos connect amp from some event he was at.
This was at least 6 or 7 years ago.
Called me to see if I could hook it up for him to try out, he had heard good things about it.
Got it working, and the next thing I knew I was changing over the old 4 zone house audio system to Sonos
Then we added a portable speaker for outdoor use.
Then we added Sonos to his theatre area system and higher end audio system.
Through all this time I am sure he received the sales emails from Sonos, and all they did was remind him he wanted to add another box to another system in his house. So he kept calling me to come and bring another one of those Sonos boxes and add it here and there.
Installation, the small margin I could get on Sonos along with changing programming on some system remotes was where I made money each trip.
And I have a customer that continues to be happy with the work I do for him.
This past year I just did a $100,000 upgrade to his 25 year old Lutron system.
This year we will be upgrading his theater area TV to 4k. With clients like this there is always something to do as the gear gets older.
In the end it is all about giving a client the right product that is easy to use and retaining them as a client for years. In a few years from now, my guess is all the old Sonos boxes will have something new and even better to take their place, and he will be interested in in those.

And you're the idiot...LOL

Ask the client if their business gives discounts whenever their customer asks or whenever a deal can be found on the Internet. If they don't discount, ask why.
