Was fighting with ARC on an XBRA9F today and discovered that while setting the TV to act as a center channel I could not use ARC for the smart features. I ended up running an optical cable back and solved the problem but I’m thinking I missed something.
To be clear ARC would switch the receiver just fine but the only audio I would get was little chirps and such. Receiver was a Yamaha 1080 and source was Netflix and Youtube apps on the TV. Also noticed the the receiver must be set to straight for clear sound with the TV as active center channel. Any other settings seem to muffle the sound.
Likely something I’m missing as well. Guess it’s time to spend some time in class.

Easy fix. ARC is a last ditch hail mary. Do not use unless there really is no other options. and then. Dont use it some more.

Could ya explain this a little more? Is this a setting in the TV (a supported feature) or something you came up with on your own

Its a A9F Feature. It literally has binding posts on the back for center speaker input.

Wow, didn't even know that was a thing.

For the OP, I think this falls under "just because you can, doesn't mean you should". "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should"

I typed that twice, once for ARC and once for using a TV for a center channel.

I would rather roll the dice on a no center mode, but I don't know if Yamaha will do that.

it sounds very good actually. Quite a nice option if your using in ceiling speakers in the room.

Might have changed, but you used to be able to select NONE for center speaker in the speaker setup mode.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Yamaha's can happily run without centre speakers configured.
I'd only ever try to use a Sony TV as a centre as a last gasp option... and only for in-ceiling speakers. Even then, not on a high end installation.
The issue with it not working when running built-in apps is interesting.

Oh yeah, ARC is the work of the devil and while it may work fine for 3 months, it can just as easily stop working and cause massive headaches for all involved. Optical is great.
eARC could theoretically be an improvement as it supposedly sits outside of CEC, so you don't get frustrating power on / off commands and confusion when products are powered up incorrectly (trying to turn on everything with the Blu-ray remote etc).

However, it will no doubt come down to different manufacturers interpretation of the spec... Basically, I'd be avoiding the first iterations in the market!
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.

I have yet to use this feature. But was very under impressed with Sony's demo at CES using the Z series as a center channel. Details in my CES post...

We also avoid ARC with any display like the plague.

if your expecting it to sound like a $400+ center channel speaker, you'll be disappointed.

If your looking to bring the vocals back to the TV. It does a great job.

I had no expectations on the demo. On the new Z series the stand alone speakers sounded decent for a TV. As a center channel the sound was hollow with an echo. This is an entirely different display as well.

maybe a little hollow... Its still a tv.. but I've never experienced any sort of echo.

I haven't heard it yet using this feature, but keep in mind, on the A9F, the glass screen itself is the speaker, using transducers on the back of the panel. The A8F has great sound for a TV, and I expect the A9F to preform fairly well as a center speaker. Nothing too high end, but will probably compare with most $200 center speakers. I'm really looking forward to trying this out.

This system has in ceiling speakers and older homeowners that have a tough time with dialog. The cabinet has no room or a center channel. All in all the center channel option of the A9F is impressive and holds its own very well. My only issue is the implementation of ARC when the option of using the TV as CC is selected. I’m sure I am missing something in that set up and the easy fix was to run an optical back for those features.
I am returning to the site to figure out an issue with IP control not turning on the TV from time to time and will investigate ARC further.
I would certainly use this setup again but as of this moment would include a Roku.
