When I read this article, I had one thought. With the lack of margins on TVs, does anyone care about selling more TVs? More x 0 is still 0.

Where the HELL did they get those 26 inch tall sales people who are photographed here next to the 55" TVs?

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

8K's are available now, why not sell them and make some $$? More are coming down the pipeline, the LG OLED's looked amazing and I bet there will be some margin on them. Prices were not released when I saw them at CES so I cannot confirm. Sony will also be releasing a couple models I posted about in a different thread here on RC. Ironically my post was pretty similar to a CePro or Resi systems article, which I read after my post.

Just how much margin do you think the 8ks will have? I don’t expect them to have anymore than the 4ks when they were new. Sure Sony’s are better than others, but have one bad tv and the profit on it is gone dealing with the warranty.

On a related note, Sunday I listened to a podcast on security issues. According to the host, the tv manufacturers have finally even killed their own profit margin on TVs. Their strategy now is to sell your data collected from the smart TVs.

We are making enough margin on the higher end TV's we can absorb a service call and still make money. Without giving away too much we could do about 30 service calls on a good 8K TV and at least break even.

The higher end 4Ks are awesome. It made me sick to my stomach when Plasmas got phased out and we had to install a bunch of crappy HD TVs. 8K? Why not? As long as the product is good i am happy to install it.

Margin shmargin. Sell surge protection, high quality mounts & sound bars to A.Make the installation worth your time and B.To provide a better product than the craigslist guys.

You can sell more 4K TVs by offering to buy back all of the crappy 3D TVs and glasses that you sold to them a few years back. Just sayin'.

One of the underlying problems with this industry is how you all got so lazy earning so much money on product margins that you were giving away your labor, your design fees, your programming time. One Runco plasma and the rest was covered.

I come from the electrical contracting world. Sometimes we could get a few points on light fixtures but on new housing the builder always made sure he got the entire cut from the lighting supply house. Then came the big box stores and homeowners would take their fixture allowance and get their own (very crappy) stuff on their own. In my area, electricians and plumbers etc. wouldn't even roll a truck a mile away for less than $125 - in 1990! Hourly rate was $100 for a master electrician. That's how we made money - and stayed in business.

You are now in a 100% service industry and you need to bill appropriately. Lawyers bill you if they have to make a photocopy of a document - that's the way you have to think if you want to survive.

Speaking of tvs and one that lots of profit was made on. Recently had an LG at home die. Broke out a low hour Elite plasma I have been hanging onto. Never hooked it up in my house since moving here. What an amazing picture.

Oh, don't we all wish we had one of those that we were, you know, "just hanging on to".

The above is great. The free walkthrough, consultations, etc. need to stop. These guys are making it hard for others and putting themselves out of business...not to mention I'm getting tired of cleaning up their messes.

I understand and I agree - to a point. As long as we are able to maintain access to product lines which have a hefty markup, are not sold online (eBay or Amazon), are only available to verified dealers, and have limited territories for dealers, then money can still be made on product - good money. Things like high-end lighting controls, shades, speakers and AV processors are a few examples of product lines on which you can do this.

But:

1. You still have to be compensated for all of the services you provide.

2. Let's face it, not everyone on this forum can get access to these distribution channels because of minimum opening orders, annual sales quotas or over-saturated locations.
