We had a builder, that got greedy after we installed a large system. They wanted 20% of the work we did on future houses. I found out that they made other trades pad their estimates to the customer, so the additional markup the builder was demanding was hidden.

We no longer work for this builder. What a scumbag! And since he and his partner roll like this, their main supper started wanting additional money from the subs. What a sickening work culture to create.

Don't pay the PA! Any legitimate professional would have a disclosed management or finders fee. If someone is not willing to let their customers know they are getting paid for their services, then there must be a problem.

Ernie,
Let us know how it turns out.

This is likely to take mmmooonnnttthhhsss to develop. Many things have been delayed over the last year. But I'll report back when there's action.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

How many of you give designers, real estate agents etc referral fees? If you do how much is it?

I was thinking of offering 5% of the hardware as a referral fee to some folks.

While that "opportunity" does come that often to me, I offer then a discount on anything they want us to install for THEM. If they dont like that, too bad, that's all they get.

Funny i just had a company approach me with a similar deal. he has a company that meets with new homeowners thru various builder contacts and presents them with lists of various "approved" contractors that do flooring, landscaping, pools, security, AV, ect - and only have ONE per field. He essentially is asking for 10% of my gross revenue (pre tax) for giving someone my business card. He is not involved in the process at all afterwards. 10% off Gross seems a bit rich?
I AM responsible for typographical errors!
I have all the money I will ever need - unless i buy something..

I'm not sure if I would walk away without responding or if I would just start laughing in their face. It would be one of the two.

I would laugh, NO DOUBT, then explain the real world to him. Or her. Or it, or whatever.

5% is maximum threshold pre ‘cost-of-doing-business’ schpeil-sp? 10% is a gun in your gut. Should said PA or ID be in, or rise to the ranks of show space and a proven list, that levels the playing field and adds bonus points.

One contractor per slot? Someone should tell him how bad he is setting himself up for a lawsuit. When a contractor screws up, he’s on the hook for recommending them.

Real estate agents can’t give you a referral. Why should you give them one? Give them a bottle of wine and a thank you card.

You mean they can't or won't? They can, can't they?

Legally they can’t unless you have a real estate license.

Real estate agents CAN give you a referral, but cannot accept any payment for doing so.

Telling a home buyer that "I recommend this guy because I've seen his good work." is a completely different thing than the kickback schemes so many try.

Having been a Realtor, and maintaining my license, I got a lot of referrals from agents. A good agent will realize that you can make them look good, same as a builder can see the benefit.

Other trades will see this same advantage, as they too can get solid referrals.

You show up on time, do quality work, it reflects well on them. They in turn get referrals. Makes the world go round.
