Im 100% certain phone calls are "scanned". My sister did a test. Talked about a product, ONLY on the cell phone. Never touched a PC, never googled it, NOTHING. Within three days, guess what ads started popping up? So, ya, keywords are listened for that go to a database.

That said, I used Alexa MULTIPLE times a day. Mostly to control my system but she comes in handy for every day questions as well.

Credit card information being given to the pizza guy

You give your credit card number to a "Pizza Guy"?

You don't need to worry about anything, if the pizza guy hasn't sold your info, you should be out buying a lottery ticket for sure. You may need that extra cash. LOL

Good luck pushing Facebook or Twitter on me. Until they convince me that they are good stewards of my data, they can keep their services.

Interesting to me that we are all techies probably in our jobs to get to play with really cool and many times more-expensive-than-we-can-afford toys yet we push back so hard if comes from outside of our niche industry...

This isn't like audiphiles crying about how CDs ruin the sound of music (that should only come from reel to reel or LP)...or those same audiophiles then whining about how the iPod is ruining the sound of their CD music

I get the safety side concerns but these devices are making lives easier. Many of our customers inquire about these technologies. If we don't live with them to compare and contrast to what we offer then we are doing our customers an injustice imo.

Privacy/safety is the only concern. Otherwise we all love it. The company I work for did a 4:3 theater 25 years ago with voice control. "Movie Time" turned the system on.

I started with the amazon experience but have moved to Google. Amazing what I can do with Google today! I start my morning getting weather and traffic and a schedule review.

My kids use it to ask relevant questions and to play music.

My wife uses it to display recipes.

We all use it to control lights and shades.

This is only scratching the surface. Am I willing to trade some privacy for the lifestyle enhancement? Yes... Do I manage it for the safety of my family? Yes!

Cell phone is worse because its with me everywhere.

I consisently get facebook friend suggestions for clients I have no friends/nothing else in common with outside of being at their house. I wasn't checking in on them and most don't even know my last name to waste their time checking in on me. The only thing I can figure is it's because I was in their home.

I understand most that most websites have tags to track you and start to advertise if you hit their site, can't figure the facebook one out though.

Heard this on a podcast today, I think this is at least somewhat explains it.

For the tin foil hat privacy crowd, how do you justify carrying around your wire tapping, conversation recording device in your pocket? Is there a difference? Siri or Google are in all of them.

I use alexa for these things:

- my 6 year old learned to say Alexa call daddy and it rings on my phone
- my wife uses one of the echo dots as a baby music player on babys room controlled remotely
- i show off a few routine phrases for my friends when alexa is controlling crestron
- to call home whem my wife doesnt pickup the phone.

for customers, only they ask us to really integrate with the automation and we cant say no.
