Just ran into a brand new, finished, high end home without a stick of low volt wire in it. 3 levels, roughly 6500 square feet. What hardware would you recommend to create a strong/reliable WIFI mesh in this situation? We primarily sell Araknis and Packedge. We have worked with Luxul, Apple Airports, and Eero. I can wire a router and 1 WAP to the modem. 1 RG6 was retro'd into a mechanical room for a broadband modem which is currently plugged into a Google Home router/WAP with a second unit plugged in upstairs (seems to work for now). When I asked Araknis, they said their solution was not ideal and not recommended. The house has a Ring Doorbell and 4 Nest thermostats already. Client wants to add AppleTV and some form of TV service. No wires rules out Cable and Tivo. Looking to use Directv Genie with wireless clients. Possible Sonos or Control4 for streaming distributed audio. Job will be T&M since there is little room to make any money on hardware. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Eero pro and DirecTV Now app on AppleTVs, no issues with C4. Or, get your retro on!

Great Idea! I forgot about the DTV Now app. Does the app give you access to every channel in your convention DTV package? Any restrictions?

Yes, local networks are available- and there are tiered packages. The lack of direct channel control is slightly annoying but the guide is robust. Recording? Not sure yet, it’s still beta. So is the Xfinity equivalent on RoKu, can let you know what that’s like late next week. I do believe set top boxes have one foot in the grave. Genie2 and Altice are nails for the coffin.

What idiot builder offers a new 6500 sq ft house with ZERO prewire? Ya, I want to buy a house from that builder.

I know, not offering a solution but that was my first thought.

The kind of asshole builder who is fully on board with the “it’s all wireless these days” idea.

Exactly what I was thinking too (as I just cold-emailed a builder that showed up in a sponsored facebook ad). It should be a Judge Dredd instant death situation.

I passed on an 8000 square-foot house project because the homeowner wanted to use google home Wi-Fi and Roku TVs with sound bars everywhere. Nest cams and stats. Some DIY alarm with his own monitoring service. Didn’t want to run cabling for network anywhere or for anything, was fully committed to running it all on WiFi.

These people need to be shown one or more of these threads. Sure, we make money on running wiring, but more importantly, we cannot do the job we want to do: give the customer what they need -- without doing it right, and it is, if you'll forgive the word, stupid to rely on wireless.

They are even foregoing the impossible goal of futureproofing. We've all been there -- some new technology is touted as THE solution, with "forever" clearly implied. Even with wiring, nobody saw HDMI coming early enough to put in ten years' worth of conduit to run it in when it finally was invented.

Actually, we should all be freaked out that we don't install 1 1/4" conduit everywhere, and EMT at that. The last twenty years have had cabling that required at least 1" tubing. With HDMI, we at first ran HDMI cabling, but then that became obsolete!

These people are making such bad, bad mistakes.

First, let’s correct one point. This is not a high end home. It’s cluster fvck and the builder should be sued for fraud.

Eero will work for WiFi, but they should make the builder pay to retro at least coax for TVs.

We don't know what the builder represented. I agree with you except for that.

In fact, is it fraud if the builder honestly believes this is exactly what is needed? Doesn't fraud have to have intent behind it?

Funny. I just recently talked to a builder at the coast, and even though he stated "I know wired is better." he will not put in ANY wiring at all, other than the coax the electrician is putting in.

Not so much as a wire for a doorbell in his houses.

I feel for the people that buy his houses because they are the ones that will be faced with buying a pricey router instead of that $19.95 POS at Wally World.

What do you bet the coax is CCS?
