I designed a theater system for a client using a Sony UHP-H1 for both BD Player and streaming box. Little did I know it might lock up... and it's done it three or four times.

Another one in a similar system in the master bedroom also has locked up.

"Locked up" means it does not respond to any commands at all until I pull the power plug, wait a half minute, and reinsert the plug.

Has anyone else had this problem? And found a solution? It happens rarely but it's always a problem, of course. Being intermittent, I doubt there's anything findable that could be fixed.

Each player is connected to a Yamaha RX-A1050. The TV in the theater is a Samsung UN85JU7100. The TV in the master bedroom is a Sony XBR65X850D. Both systems use URC MX990s with MRF350s for control.

This is the "flip" house where the only wiring going throughout the house is RG6, so I'm using DECA to get network to the various rooms. There are DirecTV satellite receivers in the different rooms, too... I don't think those model numbers will help define or solve this problem.

Thanks for any help you can give me with this.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

We have used a couple models of the Sony Blu-Ray player with streaming functions and have had them lock up.
One of the guys at work had looked into it and from memory found it is a Sony issue when using Netflix.

I now have at home one of the players and gets a lot of use for Netflix and at least once every couple of days I need to pull the power on it to get it to work again.

If the house has any automation for lights, put it on a lamp module.

Yep. Every pro knows that using combo players is a no no. It's yet another industry fail with us holding the bag. Put it on a $12 lamp timer to reset in the middle of the night.

So are you saying the Sony is running WiFi? Or over the DECA switch? I've used those in extreme situations when I can't run a wire, but could that be causing an issue in the transfer, upsetting the Sony?

I've used the 700s and 800s over the last year, while using for Netflix as well, with no issue(including my own theater). Is this system a couple years old? The H1 definitely is. Where is the firmware at? Can you run an external catX wire to test for a week?

We've experienced a lot of lock-ups with the Sony players. It seems to happen more frequently with us within 1-2 days (sometimes immediately) of the install. We don't see the issue persist with great frequency (they lock up just as much as any other streaming device from what we've seen).

No.
Or over the DECA switch?

Yes, except there's no discrete "DECA switch."
I've used those in extreme situations when I can't run a wire,

This house has to use DECA because I can't run wires anywhere. All the CAT wires (CAT3, so who really cares) were cut by the idiots who set up this house to flip it.
but could that be causing an issue in the transfer, upsetting the Sony?

Sure. "The transfer" meaning exactly what?
I've used the 700s and 800s over the last year, while using for Netflix as well, with no issue(including my own theater).

Yeah. Looks like I spent more money and got a nicely polished lemon. Two, actually.

The system is almost exactly two years old.
I'll check the firmware. Good thought.
The closest place I could connect a CAT wire is fifty feet away inside the wall of the kitchen nook where I have Doorbird wiring... and I'd have to install a network switch. That's not going to happen.
Plus, these have worked for months at a time so how do you tell when a solution is PROVEN? That's not going to happen.

I like the suggestion of a lighting control.
Anyone know of a way, via IR, to turn an outlet on and off?* My distributor came up with a pair of Wattboxes, but how about lighting control? Turning an outlet off, then on again?

EDIT: *using the MX990. I just spoke with URC about their obsolete lighting control stuff and the 990 could not be set up to control that, even if parts were available.

It's just life with tech. I have had some Sony BD players lock up the entire network in the house until the power was pulled. I set expectations realistically for clients. Anything that has a "chip" in it and\or connects to the internet, will lock up at some point and need rebooted. Facts of life and first world problems. It's mostly only old people who get grumpy when the "DVD machine" won't respond to the clicker. Then they whine when I tell them I will charge them to come reset it for them. Which is usually easier than trying to walk them through doing it for themselves over the phone or through email.

Sony wasn't much help when we reached out to them. We had to replace 3 players at one house because all 3 locked up the network often enough to be annoying. They were a Costco sony model, and we replaced them with bdps3700 models which solved the problem. Bad batch perhaps?

Sony had us reset them, force firmware updates, etc. Nothing worked. They play discs fine. Let them do that and that only and you might be fine. Lol

I take it you had to replace them totally at your cost, right?

In the theater, I built a push-button switch into a single gang outdoor style electrical box. To reset, they reach into the power area, which nobody likes to do, push and hold the button for a few seconds, but it works. Until the next time. I guess I'll make another one for the bedroom system.
