I shouldn't have to ask this but I do it so seldom...

W98 machine set to fileshare on C: and workgroup is named WORKGROUP.

XP machine set to fileshare C: and workgroup is named WORKGROUP.

Running thru Linksys 4 port router which currently allows both machines
DSL access fine.

Each machine sees the other in network neighborhood but when you click
on the other machine it says "not accessible" after a long delay.

What am I forgetting?

Thanks!

A few things to look at:

Did you share the drive or folders for full access?
Is there a firewall running? If so add those PCs IP #s to an "allow" list.

I've had 98/XP setups that wouldn't share properly until the following was done:

Add Netbui to both machines
Add IPX/SPX to both (rare)
Remove the bindings and protocols and put them back in again.

If I may suggest: Install each user as a user on the other machine. That will prompt the "pinged" computer to ask for a user name and password. The computer thus requested must have the user name and password stored on it.

NetBui will not be available as a protocol on an XP machine, but it should be enabled on the Win98 PC. You may have to change the DNS on the Win98 PC to 'localhost' also.

If you can browse, & see the PCs on the network, 90% of the time it is a permisson issue. Check your Firewall settings, & do Larry's suggestion on the security/user settings.

Thanks for all your comments.

I've seen the firewall option on XP, but didn't remember it on w98.

Is there a firewall in the router that I have to consider as well? Am I disabling it, or what? Is that going to change security for DSL and web browsing?

I'm having the same problem, but with 2 XP machines.

Can't see any computers on the network - just gives me:

"Workgroup is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

Both are in the same workgroup, both have both user names on each machine, both users are listed as computer administrators.

Network uses a Linksys BEFSR81 gateway/router set as "Gateway"

Both computers are able to connect to the internet via the gateway/router and DSL modem.

Whadda ya think???

TIA,

JJP

verify your ip address's are in the same subnet (i.e. 192.168.1.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0)
if dchp is set to on on the router shut all the computers and router down turn on router wait 1 min or so then turn on the computers

You also need to login to the 98 machine, if you bypass the login on 98(by hitting escape or cancel) you cannot share but you can still access the web through the router.
Go phuq yourself!
