Just did my first Sonos amp. Perfect scenario for it. Two in ceiling Triad R28’s connected to a bar TV. Now I’ve done the R28’s enough to know that they sound pretty good, even off the connect:amp. I was anxious to try this because of all the good things I’ve heard and have seen guys powering tower speakers off it.

Now I know the R28s aren’t great but they are pretty good for what they are.

This amp made them sound awful. And I couldn’t get much volume out of them, even turned up all the way. I checked that the limit wasn’t turned on and it wasn’t.

A few weeks ago another poster posted the same thing (goldenzrule) is there a bad run of these? I cannot believe that this is normal, because if it is it’s going to have to be connects into 3rd party amps.

Anyone else seeing the same thing?

Did you go into the Advanced Settings for Audio?

Huh, not good hearing multiple complaints about this amp, I've been wanting to pick one up to replace my old analog only Denon. The old amp is rated at 55watts per channel Class D, this new amp is rated at 125watts per channel.. Theoretically it should be better than the old amp.

What sources are you using? Are you listening to a low bitrate stream? Do you have access to some high quality streams or networked files?

Curious how this is hooked up. Via HDMI ARC from TV to the Amp? Could it be a setting in the TV affecting the volume/sound?

If it is connected via HDMI did you try connecting something else to the AMP's input to see if sound plays fine that way?

Just read the other thread. Ugh. Curious also if you spoke with Tech Support. I know SBS has been using an AMP for months with no issues. I have 4 of these spec'd on an upcoming job and I have another one that I was going to use for an older customer to hookup to their speaker selector vs. the receiver so those rooms would be in sync with the new Beam on another TV.

I just hooked ours up in our showroom. There is no way the output is more. I was underwhelmed. Really upsetting.

Was yours similar to both our experiences? I didn't get much volume until at about 80% and at 100% I could carry on a conversation comfortably at only 5' from the speaker.

Would everyone with experience please post the hardware and connections so that we can figure out what the issue might be.

I went to a Sonos event at a local distributor and as soon as I heard the sound from the Amp, it sounded like one speaker's wires had been reversed. They didn't do anything to make it sound particularly good and it certainly wasn't impressive, regardless of any comments about its sound quality from the Sonos guy. They had one at the front of the place that was connected to a pair of Polk towers and that sounded decent, but it wasn't playing very loudly and the music isn't anything I would use to demo an amp or speakers.

They seem to think their stuff is the best sounding- they need a reality check. Someone needs to put some of the HEOS pr MusicCast speakers next to the Sonos, to compare, so someone from Sonos can hear the difference for themselves.

The issue might be using a POS instead of a real piece of audio equipment.

I haven't used any Sonos Connect Amps because the paces where I might, other than Play 1,3,5 or PlayBar, have multiple speakers and that wouldn't be enough power, so I used the Connect and a separate amp, mostly multi-channel amps, bridged for each speaker. I haven't been impressed by the Beam or Play Base, at all.

I'm not ready to use this stuff when sound quality matters, yet. I went to a shop that sells Sonus Faber, Audio Research, VPI turntables and other expensive stuff- one of the guys said the Amp is very good for what it does and the amplifier is actually pretty good. I used to think he knew what he was talking about.

It's a decent sounding amplifier, certainly better than CONNECT:AMP.
