So, with the price having come down so far, I decided to take one for the team and try one out. Walabot DIY is only $49.99 right now. It came yesterday. It feels cheap, all plastic, and attaches to your phone with a reuseable, really sticky rubber thing. The surprise though, it works. I only tested on my sheetrock interior walls so far though. I will try outer walls and hopefully get a chance to try plaster at a client's house soon. I'll get some screenshots and maybe a video or two to post of using it.

Are these the same guys that made the "X-Ray Specs" advertised in magazines when I was a kid?

That was different- these guys had Sea Monkeys.

Wow, I hadn't thought about that stuff in 30 years, looks like both are still around on Amazon! I could never buy that stuff as a kid, I might have to get both.

No, the product has a decent theoretical basis.

The Walabot has antennas inside it that detect characteristics of what's inside the wall. A HUGE factor in its performance is the quantity of such antennas. And more antennas = higher price and better performance. I believe, but cannot confirm, that the one they sent me for review in late 2016 had two antennas. Its performance was such that it seemed to be looking for a bus to throw itself under. I declined to simply go off about that, so I didn't write the review. And when I REQUIRED a studfinder, I bought a Zircon HD55, which did just what I needed.

So, no x-ray specs, nor sea monkeys, but these are the guys who, when I contacted them again early this month about the one they sent me for review, told me the one they sent me (Nov 2016) was not quite right yet... and they asked me if I would like another, current, working one to check out.

I replied YES. That was December 6. There was no reply to that email, nor any other communication since then.

I never wrote the evaluation for the earlier unit because it was obviously flawed. They and I dropped followup on it way back then. So I'd say their customer service has to be proven better than their publicity department!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

An Amazon review of more that 20% 1-star should give pause...

Idunno. Definitely was willing to throw $50 it's way to see. One section in my bathroom I have the bottom foot of sheetrock cut out while I fixing a leak. I tested on that wall and it found everything with 100% accuracy. Will try outer walls today. Don't have any plaster walls to try though.

Compare to 1800 4+ star reviews...

I'm telling you what I've experienced so far. Don't give a shit what Amazon reviews say. I've seen my fair share of fake reviews to know not to go solely on those. So far, what I'VE tested has worked 100%

Stay calm, I am not dissing you by any means but just giving you more information. I have read plenty of reviews and you can tell when you have a shill review especially when there are under 10 or under 20 total reviews. But by the time you get to 50 or 100 or 1800 reviews, then you can have something that is fairly trustworthy.

If you have a larger quantity of reviews and over 20% bad... just thinkin’...

[Link: amazon.com] positive then negative if you want to go off reviews. Again, I don't give a shit about reviews. Just speaking on personal experience so far.

I'll go with Golden's review over others. So I ordered it. Then I cancelled it. I read the fine print - "does not work on iphone". :(

Yeah, that's always been the case. I'm pretty sure it says it on their site and has a warning during checkout.

My review is still limited though. I have to do some more thorough testing before coming to a final conclusion.
