We are in the process of an outdoor theater. The client no longer wants a soffit where we were going to house the projector. They want the projector to be housed on the balcony above which is uncovered. We need to come up with a solution to house the projector that is waterproof, and also some type of automated door to open/close for the front.

Any ideas?

They want the projector in an enclosure that can (depending on location) have the sun beating down on it all day? That birds can crap on? That people can trip over? (Note that tripping over something is much more fun on a balcony because the landing takes longer than just tripping directly onto the ground.) That his dogs can pee on? That will not in any way fit into any person's idea of "design"? That rainwater might leak into? That snow can pile up in front of?

Find an appropriately sized cardboard carton. Paint it black. Set it in the proposed location on the balcony. Tell him to leave it there and at least twice a day look at it and think about how it looks. Mention all the other negatives. That might cure him of the idea.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

It's in southern CA. It barely rains and the weather is always nice, so weather is not really a huge factor.

It's on a balcony that no one uses, so there will be no foot traffic.

Not following you with the balcony thing. Is it going to be mounted under the balcony or above it...completely exposed.

If its under the balcony then check out the many examples of outdoor enclosures here... [Link: google.com]

It will be above the balcony, exposed. If the box is weatherproof, it should not matter.

I found this, but we've never used a projector behind glass. Who knows if it will work.

Perhaps you can build into a planter box or something so it's less of an eyesore than a metal enclosure?

Sure, that's almost exactly what we were planning, we just need to make sure the projector will work through glass. The actual balcony is like I said never used. The other concern would be the glass getting dirty. Someone would have to go up on a ladder and wipe it every now and then. I guess these are the joys of outdoor theaters!

Get Port Glass. It's made specifically for this.

If the box is on a balcony, why would someone have to get up on a ladder to clean the glass? Wouldn't they just lean down? Or when you say "that no one uses," do you mean it's difficult to get to?

Is this mounting location within the keystone adjustment range for the projector?

The projector has a 3 foot vertical lens shift. It will be slightly mounted on a down angle to add another 2-3 feet. There will be keystoning, but we should be able to overcome it and make it pretty close.

The balcony has an iron fence, so it would be difficult to reach round and clean the glass, but it would be possible.

I've written to the company that makes the outdoor box to see if they've tested it and how their glass works.

I was worrying about what it would look like not about weather resistant. My thinking was that if it were under the balcony you could get away with a big surface mount metal box.

If you are using keystone, then I would not worry about the glass. There is going to be enough degradation of the picture quality, that the little bit of reflection & haloing a regular flat glass door will do, will not matter in the bigger picture (no pun intended).
Just make sure the projector lens is as close to the glass as possible.

So the cardboard box could work as the solution to this! Why buy an expensive enclosure?

The company wrote back and said they have many successful installations.

I agree with the glass and keystoning. This is not a typical dedicated indoor home theater. They are not expecting the picture to be comparable as we have already set the expectations.

We got the screen in and this is what it looks like so far.

The top over the screen will be a waterfall.
