This is driving me crazy.  With the latest OS update, you get a split screen mode when you open two windows, such as Safari and Mail app.  I don't want a split screen and the feature is just plain dumb.  It appears there is no way to shut it off, at least my searching hasn't found anything.  Everything I have read says to press the green button to expand your window once it has already gone to split screen.  Pressing the green button actually changes the window to a small window in the center of the screen and a second press of the green button maximizes it.  I was hoping someone knew of a way to permanently disable split window.

Not sure of what update you're referring to, nothing has changed on my machine...If you want to go back and forth between split screen, you don't just click the green button int he top left...you have to hold it down.

Hope that helps.

No, in Mohave it will automatically go to split screen when trying to send an email (and other functions as well). You can go into mail preferences and uncheck a box for split screen but it has no effect. It will NOT open the send mail window in full screen without pressing the green expand button, twice.

I have Mohave and nothing of the sort happens to me. Did you download your OS from The Internet Research Firm in Russia?

I figured out the issue, sorta.  I had to reboot the computer AFTER changing the setting (unchecking a box in preferences)

Actually, only partially correct.  It fixes the issue within the mail app.  However, if I have, say, Safari open, and then go to select the mail app, it will open up in split window still.

Have you tried holy water or incense?

Honestly, just stay out of the thread if you have nothing to add.

Thank you.  First article I have seen about it.  Weird wording they use for the feature.  I'll give it a shot.  Thanks again.

I personally have two "desktops. And a full screen Mail and Calendar.

If you want to full screen an app, say Mail. Just click the green button. Do not press and hold it, or move the mouse. Other wise it will assume that you want to split screen it. The Mail app should go into full screen mode.

if you have your Preference--> TrackPad--> More Gestures--> Swipe between full screen apps with four fingers enabled. All you'll need to do is swipe left or right with four fingers.
