I had an interesting text conversation with someone the other day...

"Hi ! We got your info on nextdoor. We live in Woodbury (my city). We already purchased a wireless "theater" system and would like to know how much to set up? Thanks, Stevie."

So, the text for pricing is always interesting, especially this time of year. "Wireless theater", great, sure. But I take the high road, just in case it's legit, nextdoor, yada yada.

I text back "Do you have a brand and model?"

They reply with two pics. One of a Locus L300 LED projector. The second of a Kamron KA-9 HD Home theater system.

Sad really, SMH. But, I take the high road again "I probably wouldn't take that on. I've never even heard of those brands" They reply "Understandable... thank you!"

Naturally, I looked up up the gear before I texted, total white van stuff. From the sound of it, I'm guessing they got scammed and don't know it yet. Or, small percent they were trying to eventually scam me, at install maybe? That's a pretty long play for a scam though.

Either way, Happy Holidays!

Very odd page footer on the projector website:

Specifications are subject to change without notice. Model number and manufacturer's suggested prices are for identification purposes only. Manufacturer's suggested prices do not represent a bonafide selling price in the metro trading area.

And, interesting lamp "specs":

  • 250 Watt Ultra Bright Lamp

  • Color Temperature 9000K

  • Lamps Power: 250W/40,000 Hours

  • Nominal Impedance: 4-8 Ohms

And, it's an ULTRA HD 4K at 1080p

Looks like that pair is sometimes sold as a set. Reading some reviews by folks who know it's a scam, utter trash as expected.

The latest thing going around on Facebook is the people shilling "Cheap Cable" service, work from home scams and the like.

Just more reward for having the internet.

Did you text them back and ask them to actually open the box and see if they bought bricks.

Looks like Locus, Aspen, Ikon, Vector, Orion are going to end up in court over patent theft and copyright violations............

I bet there are dozens of these sites all selling the exact same junk.

Pricing is hilarious. Same model at different sites is $1000 different.

We had those too. I was working in a store that was on the edge of a bad neighborhood. From time to time we were the victim of “snatch and run”. As a hedge we kept a few “factory sealed” boxes of bricks near the front door. I can only speculate the outcome after these boxes were sold on the street.

I had someone who called me a year ago looking for us to install a system he already purchased. When I got to his house he showed me that projector and surround system. He first said that he paid like $5k for it but then said the guy he bought it from a son of a "good" friend for $3k. I told him that he was being scammed and that he should return it. He never called me back....
