I found out client's current projector is Epson 6030UB. Obviously you get what you pay for, not a high end projector........

So there's the definite start of your story. Want a quiet ride in the country? Don't drive the tractor!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

6030' s are pretty damn quiet. I can only barely hear them when there is NO sound in the room. unless the fans are set to high or it is right above me?

The times I've heard that complaint is when the projector has been directly above the users head and they have the picture on in the background while talking with friends / family.
During a movie, you'll never hear a projector that has fans that aren't close to dying...

Keeping it in eco-mode is the other key, but if there's ambient light in the room it may not be achievable.
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.

The 6030UB is rated at 32db...the Sony's and JVC's are down in the mid-20db range in Eco mode. That's not much of a difference, especially considering the room probably has that much ambient noise without the projector on, unless it's a properly acoustically treated and built room.

Tell the client what a 100" TV costs, and see if they are down with that. If they're not, then tell him what it will cost to get the projector out of the room or build a hush-box around it.

Osiris, actually, consider this. dB ratings are interesting. a change in 1 dB is barely perceptible. A change in 3 dB is noticeable. a 10 dB change is twice as loud. So a difference of 6 or 7 dB is significant in a quiet environment.

"Properly acoustically treated" doesn't mean 'acoustically dead'.

I bet that projector wouldn't be noticed if someone were to put a mechanical clock or small water feature in the room.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

The 100” Sony z9d is discontinued and detailed at $60k
Sony short throw very quiet
Epson laser $8k quiet but similar inn kids level to the 6030ub
Building shush box or putting the projector in another room shooting through port glass best solution

What's his budget?
Is this a 5k, 50k or 500k client/job?

Have you looked into "projector hush box" ?

They're even more interesting than that.

You were doing great until you said "in a quiet environment." A quiet projector could easily add 6 dB to the overall SPL if the room is at, say, 45 dB. But if you were in a club with a band on stage, a 100 dB SPL sound might be required to increase the overall sound level by 6 dB. An increase of 6 dB is significant in ANY environment.

I think you were trying to get at the fact that it's surprising, in a quiet environment, how little sound is required to significantly raise the background SPL. But at this point I'm putting words in your mouth. Where were you trying to go with this?

The annoyance factor of "noise" varies from individual to individual. As my handle indicates, I am a fringe case in this respect. In many respects it is a "The Princess and the Pea" saga.

I can sympathize with this customer.

I doubt an Epson owner has a budget for a 100” panel.
