Client is building a new house and doesn't want another projector because of fan noise on current projector.
So, I'm reaching out because he currently has a 100" projector and haven't started looking for 100" TV's yet but imagine they're limited. I believe it's an Epson 8030 or 40? I may be wrong on the model. But any event, I'm checking to see what's out there that is quiet or doesn't have a fan. It needs to be 4K mid to high end, not necessarily top of the line. Any ideas, models would be greatly appreciated, even 100" TV models you've used.
Hopefully I've given enough information.

Build an enclosure for the projector. It reduces fan noise. Better yet, mount it so that the PJ is in the other room with just a port into the media room.

Yeah. You might need to back it up, so you'll need a long throw lens, giving him bragging rights that he's got a projector with a special lens setup so he's got the quietest projector in town. It's not much of a brag, but it might motivate him to okay the idea.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Here’s a good selling point for a louder audio system.

A lot of the newer Sony and JVC projectors are very quiet. The Epson depending on model are also quieter than they used to be. For a 100" screen definitely use lower power mode to make it even quieter. knowing which model he has now could give us a reference, some models could definitely be pretty loud especially in high power mode. What's the budget? Any limitations on projector placement?

Laser models will help with reduced fan noise from what I’ve done and remember.

Any consumer model 4K, ~100” screen is going to be big money ($40-50k)

Planar has a 98” model from the QE series that provide a very nice picture for roughly 15k

What about that Sony console short-throw projector thing?

If that's a 'no' then Ive always had good luck with the JVC's for being quiet.

Had a Panasonic that couldn't be heard and it was directly over the back row seats.

I'd step back for a moment and ask several things.

First, what is the projector make and model he currently owns?
Second, where does that projector live in relation to seating?

Knowing what he has allows you to use your google skills to determine fan noise when product is new. Understand that fans can get louder over time, of course.

Understanding where that projector lives currently, plus the spl of the fan, allows you to understand how loud it is where he sits.

You can then find an alternative with lower fan noise, and a longer lens, and give him real world comparison numbers that validate his complaint.

This thread, before that question, can only bring forth general responses. We all should be providing model numbers as we go. And yes, sometimes I ask questions without model numbers, too.

How can we provide information on a quieter projector if we don't know what model he's got now?

Another issue, though, is whether the client will spend $40K if necessary to get a 100" TV because he's adamant he WILL NOT have another projector. Just because we think the situation can be cured with a projector, doesn't mean it can be.

I would prefer a more traditional projector setup but here is something in his price range that might work:

Make sure he is not complaining about the fan noise during start up or shut down. They tend to run harder when the projector is turned off.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

If that's the problem, you might try masking it via timing.

We used to be called to service or replace systems where rack fans came on when the system was turned on. With the room silent, the client would hit a button and several fans would crank up, reminiscent of a WWII plane scrambling scene. Once we discovered ATMs systems with thermostats, those days were gone: the system started silently; by the time the fans kicked in due to heat, sound was usually playing; when the fans stayed on after the system was shut down, who cared? Nobody was paying attention to the system then.

So, to translate this for a projector system, if you can get something started up that will pump some sound into the room, THEN start the projector, you might be able to mask a good deal of the thing the client dislikes about the projector.

If he dislikes the sound at startup, don't think he'll forget it in the middle of a movie: his attention will have been caught by the sound at the very start and it will continue to annoy him.

Meanwhile, you can introduce him to Samsung's Onyx series LED screens. Note that this article does not mention price AT ALL: [Link: svconline.com]
