Quest today: Prove or disprove that this possible for s client.

Setup to Alexa:
Sonos ONE
Alexa enabled TV (I have a Sony and LD OLED)
Yamaha Aventage 1080
Yamaha WXC Music Cast for zone 2

Can anyone enlighten me with your experiences, which will work and which won't? Is this possible without a control system?

Is your Alexa App on a phone/pad/computer indicating that the ONE is connected? Rebooting the ONE will not hurt anything. (but, you might loose the current Queue).

Wha sources are they going to watch?

I started playing with more Alexa options last night. Even if you can make this work, why would you want to? Volume control alone would be irritating. Not to mention browsing a channel guide

Yes on phone app said it was connected. I had to disconnect, add as speaker and discover SONOS one again, it's ok now. Thanks Buzz.

I would never recommend it but client was wondering if it is possible. The volume is my first expectation of exactly that. I would last an hour asking Alexa for every volume and channel change, and ask for a remote.

I think he wants to ability to turn things on (avr, cable box, blu ray, tv) by voice. He has Comcast X1, so it is already a voice remote. He would likely want that controlled by Alexa as well.

Since he has ceiling speakers, the zone 2 feature could be activated throughout the house by voice (inwall modules or echo dots.)

I think the better way to accomplish this is with a control system that also has an Alexa skill. Then with Alexa routines and the control system macros you can make it happen much more reliably than with just Alexa. At least this is what I’m seeing with Alexa in my own experience.

I find it odd that people want to control a multi-thousand dollar system with a $49 trinket. It will be interesting to see which manufacturer will be first to achieve full Hal 9000 AI levels.

My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

Alexa integration has greatly improved since it first came out. Initially companies rushed our skills that only abou half worked. Over the last week I’ve started playing with Alexa again to see if it can be useful. I like it for turning lights on and off. I created a Goodnight routine where Alexa turns off the living room and kitchen lights, sets one light in the kitchen to 30%, locks both doors, (for some reason she usually can’t get the locks to respond) and turns off my living room system. For these types of things, I like Alexa. I can say “Alexa, goodnight” and leave the room. But for controlling tv sources, it’s awkward and slow. A remote control is a lot faster.

My programming day was clunky Volume up and down commands were enough for me to want to exclude Alexa from my vocabulary forever. Haven't programmed lights yet. Which devices are you using for lights? In-wall switches, etc.

Can Alexa unlock doors as well? What's to prevent a thief from telling Alexa to unlock the doors and simply walk in?

I have UPB lights and some Philips Hue bulbs. Also some z-wave lamp modules. I didn’t program anything on Alexa. Alexa discovered the lights through the elan skill. Actually the hue lights are a bit confusing because she found those through elan and through the Hue bridge.

Lights - kinda fun and OK.

Multi-room Sonos - not so good. I tell my clients I will set it up, but consider it a work in progress, and not as good way of controlling things as the app.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Originally she couldn’t. But they have added an option to unlock. But it requires a voice code. However, with one of the latest updates on elan, Alexa doesn’t usually communicate with my locks now.

In C4 I worked around this Alexa limitation. You just have to program an Alexa routine programmed to toggle a variable created in C4. Then program that variable to do the locking/unlocking. She's not smart enough to know!

I did this with a gate so the customer could unlock a motorized gate.
