The answer is No, you don't need it. Here are reasons why.

1. Most likely solution...The Cable box remote may be able to control your TV.

2. In the event that your cable box remote cant control your TV or you dont have a cable box, you can manually turn your TV on, adjust volume and change channels by pressing the buttons on it.

3. If 1 & 2 don't work for you just buy a cheapo ($10) universal remote and pray it has codes for your TV.

The answer is “probably not”. Most cable box remotes can be programmed to handle the basic TV functions, such as Power, Volume, and Input selection. If you need to change internal TV settings or you want to use the TV’s Apps (Netflix, News, browse your photos, etc.), you’ll need the TV remote.
