I also have an AppleTV 4K, and I feel that the iTunes-delivered video is superior to Prime video (via the TV's internal app) for rental content- can you comment on that at all?

When you are comparing different services, then the defining factor is almost always going to be the service themselves. Netflix, Prime, Vudu, Hulu, iTunes, etc... They all use their own compression rates and codecs for their services. So it is going to look different from one provider to the next. That is a given.

The comparison to make is the same content, on the same service, done the same way.
Meaning: Have both the ATV & TV wired to your network. Make sure nothing else is using your network at the time (disconnect everything else if you want to be sure). Go to Vudu (as an example, they usually have good video streams for my location). Pick a movie. Stream it on the ATV. Then stream the same movie using Vudu on the TV app. That will give you a good comparison of the two.

TCL and some Sharp models have Roku built in and ARE the control system, using a Roku remote control. It works just like a normal Roku and just like my Roku, the Spectrum app sucks but the rest work normally. For the money, I think the TCL is a good value and haven't heard that they're dropping like flies.

LG Had Roku equipped models as well. Sold and installed a few of them.
Every aspect of them was identical to the TCLs (down to the remote, table stands and bezel).

I have a TCL Roku tv in my office and it has been a great bang for the buck. I have an appletv hooked to it as well but pretty much only use that for airplay so I have a 3rd monitor (I put blueprints on it when doing proposals).

Appletv has the best UI out of all of them, Roku works well, LGs "smart" features look doofy but work ok, Sony's is decent (had to figure it out for a client who insisted on using it on her new OLED), Samsung's Smarthub is utter trash.

Highfive. There was a recent update. If that box was in a warehouse or on a shelf at your local office it got updated in the field. There is your hour.

Reasons for separate streamer:

1) In some instances, it can be very difficult to power cycle the TV when the apps lock up. We came across an installation the other day where there was a 1" border/space around the TV and this made it impossible to unplug the set as their Netflix had locked up.

There was probably pretty good access to the circuit breaker. Hoping you didn't install this TV, you'd have to point out that the TV was installed in a way that missed the possible need to pull the plug. (The few times I've looked at TV mounting instructions, they never say a TV should have that little space around it, just for heat/air flow reasons.)
2) Consistency across devices makes it much easier to troubleshoot issues over the phone.

Absolutely. This is what I meant when I referred to consistency being an advantage to the installer.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

It was shipped from Ohio. The ones I pick up at the local store work much better.

And coming soon. Spectrum world box with the new guide and Netflix access. Oh boy. Not kidding.

I’ve installed 3 of them. Boxes seem to have potential but gosh they are horrible right now. If customer is a previous customer and use to the old interface it’s a nightmare. If they are new then not such a big deal. But every box has issues and I’ve had to call and get them to send multiple hits, constant resetting etc. to get to work. I logged into Netflix on 1 of them but didn’t get a chance to play with it.

I prefer the Spectrum app on Roku anyday rather than their cable boxes.

If you're using AVR, separate box is a no-brainer.
Even in a stand-alone situations that cost of a separate box is insignificant if it makes programming and user experience better

I tried it- it was very inconsistent. It would take a long time to start, sometimes hung up and showed the spinning wheel, would restart- it became a no-go and then, a customer had the same experiences.

Any time I have a say in the cable box, it's going to be Arris, Cisco or Samsung. It's not worth wasting time with the others but I haven't tried a Spectrum 101 or 201 yet.

I guess I’m lucky in my area. Only issue I’ve had is it disconnected once & customer needed to type in password again. Other than that i have about 100-150 Roku’s installed in the field the past year strictly as a cable box replacement.

What are the newer, reliable ROKUs? I use to keep one on hand that had old a/v outputs, and then a ROKU 4.

Which ones do you use now, that don't mess with you??

What is the channel browsing/selection process like from the Roku Spectrum app?
If it's not simple, it's not sufficiently advanced.

Not bad once you get over not having number buttons. You have to pull up the guide and scroll to find channel. It moves fast & customers haven’t complained.

I only use the Ultras. 2018 & 2019 with the advanced remote. Maybe it’s just my service area. Minimum Mbps is 50 but usually always over 100. I love the Roku’s 🤷🏼‍♂️

When roku is built in to a tv, what do you lose, a ten key pad. I prefer my roku to be plugged component. My favorite model at this time is 3810 roku stick+.
