Other than being well used, what would cause these remotes to lock up?

Pull the battery, put it back in and let them reboot and they're good for a few days, but then they just sit on the charger and lock up again.

That is odd, they are not even networked remotes!

I have not seen any repeated failures, with dozens and dozens out in the field. Sounds like you just have to replace that one or two…
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

I have seen failing batteries and 3rd party batteries lockup Crestron TPMC-3Xs. Replace with a different battery and problem solved.

I agree on 3rd party batteries. Many of them just SUCK and cause more problems than they are worth. Customers sometimes will do anything on their own to save $3.

The two that have this issue have URC batteries in them.

The other 5 980's in the system have some batteries I picked up on Amazon and they don't have the issue.

I'll try swapping batteries and see what happens.

Maybe. PM me.

So, On one, I found the OEM URC battery is swelling. Removed the battery cover and the remote no longer locks up. On the other I haven't bothered with it for the moment, but do have two new batteries coming in.

Not a bad idea to remove the remote from the charger once the battery indicator shows a full battery- that will prevent the charger from swelling the battery over time. Also, if it's a vacation home, leave the remote off the charger when out of town, and recharge when you return.

Battery swelling will often cause buttons on the remote to be "pushed" causing system instability and lock up on remotes and touchpanels. The worst for us was the TPMC-8X.

To be fair the 3x was good at failing even when new.
I think all of them have been purged from my client's systems by now.
