I don't want a commercial for Control4 on TV. It's not a product that 95% of the population can afford. I don't want to get phone calls and emails from guys who are looking to price shop in comparison to Ring and Nest and Sonos.

Most people in the same income range as me think my $400 Soundcast Outcast Jr is extravagant when I bring it to a BBQ. They also think the Sonos Playbar is really expensive high-end audio. They can't wrap their heads around $500 for a universal remote.

You don't see commercials on TV for Control4 for the same reason you don't see commercials on TV for Wolf, Ferrari, LVMH brands, etc.

I think we often forget though that while Sonos used the CI industry to create some name recognition, they have been very successful marketing to the Target and Best Buy customers.

Battery/oulet powered outdoor Sonos zoneplayer would be a huge seller I think . With Sonos Net you could pepper those suckers in a big back yard and have a nice party - or just add a few outdoor outlets during landscape phase and then add weather proof speakers. No extra speaker wiring needed. Nice retrofit solution!

Sonos isn't comparable to Control 4, closer to Harmony.

It's also real easy to throw a BOOST into a window somewhere.

And then run inside to select music and volume

The only thing premium about Sonos is the price.

And the fact that it sets up easily and does what you want it to do.

Oh, and did I mention that it sells itself?
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

I agree with this. I don't think marketing to the masses would help Control4 or their dealers. I also think that as dealers we dont want Control4 to become a household name. What happens when Control4 (or whatever) starts to suck? Or requires you to sell more than you can if you want to remain a dealer? Or just plain p*sses you off? Dealer X now has to choose a new product and then fight a new battle where customers want Control4 (or whatever) but you don't have access to it.

And has little to no service truck rolls after installation.

A battery powered Play 1 / Play 3 type speaker would be a great seller.
If they manage to get the pricing spot on I believe the SonosNet will make it a good option for the DIY crowd.
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.

What exactly is premium in their pricing from a company whose most expensive device about $700? The provide an economical audio system that work really well.

Ever see a commercial for Rolex, Mercedes, Breitling, Bentley? They exist and are played all the time... A Breitling watch may cost as much or more as the entire Control4 system installed.   You get the point....You'll typically see these commercials during The Masters, Financial Channels, etc...

Well, your kinda right. Sonos works much better than control 4 and harmony sucks.
Lets see a control 4 system work for 10 years with zero dealer interaction.

All of the brands you specified are "Cash and Carry", transactional, status-signifier products that instantly signal to anyone from the connected planet that you are rich. They make things that generations of people have recognized as luxury items, in industries that are hundred+ years old. Average Joe watching The Masters knows he's looking at a commercial for something he can't afford, and even if he was aspirational, he could find out what it would cost him in 30 seconds online. You can't do that with a custom system where the price is massively variable depending on the number of devices and their quality.

I would bet that nobody is walking into a Bentley dealership expecting to walk out for Hyundai money. I get a few phone calls a week from people who are blown away by what professional home automation costs when I tell them. I'm not interested in fielding more of those phone calls.

Sonos is being forced to innovate now. They can no longer rest on new product releases every couple of years. This could be a great thing or their demise. Only time will tell. An outdoor speaker will be a great thing for them.
