Anyone use a small portable table. Not for heavy duty work. Maybe a place to set tool bag, laptop, cables and such next to rack, control equipment or alarm equipment for initial setup. Looking for recommendations if anyone uses such a thing.

I have a $40 four foot folding table that's pretty neat. See it at [Link: homedepot.com]. I also have a six foot version of the same thing. The four foot table can be set to three different heights. If you get one I can describe a pretty simple way to set the heights. That might be in the instructions.... but I didn't read those.

I like the Academy one. In pic it looks like it does not open flat. Appears to have a dip in middle. Does it? Ernie, appreciate recommendation. However not compact enough in my opinion.

If you just need something for your laptop try one of these... [Link: bhphotovideo.com]The next step up in size IMO is what Ernie linked to. I normally go with a 4X4' "card table". Off topic... Years ago (2011) in New York i bought myself a nice office chair for a big install. I was there for a few months. I stored it with a card table in the crawl space. This summer i went back for service after a lightning strike. I had forgotten about the office chair. What a nice surprise. So much nicer than the cheap folding chairs.

The reason I have that stupid flat do-nothing table is that it's stable, it's flat, it doesn't take up much space, and it's cheap. On November 5, 2018 at 22:30, Hasbeen said...

That's experience talking. :) Yeah, I have one of those Keter tables. I was going to use it so much I started to build something to hold it up against the roof of the van. Got stopped. Haven't even taken it on a job in four years. Or maybe it's six. Slightly bump the Academy (Magellan) table and watch your laptop show you why you needed that SSD.

If you are seeking ultra compact, you could consider this: [Link: amazon.com]The accessories are stupid and nearly useless. It’s a little wobbly and can’t hold much weight. But it’s absolutely tiny and I use mine a lot.

I've never really thought about a table as I have not noticed a need for one. Are y'all needing a place to stage something? Set tools? Eat dinner? A place for wine? Whats the deal?

Musical keyboard stand and a piece of plywood. [Link: amazon.com]Adjustable height from standing to coffee table style. Cheap, compact, lightweight, and if you cut/drill/mar the top, easy to replace. Cut a 2" hole in the corner of the top for a handle, cord organization, clamping, etc., and a couple 1/2" holes for screwdrivers etc. Plywood also doubles as a protector when working on counters etc. Also great for setting receivers on when working in cabinets, or a test monitor stand, calibration mic holder, laser level platform... Bucket seat optional.

About 3 years ago I got tired of sitting on buckets and boxes for days at a time doing configuration and programming so I got o ne of the 4ft folding tables that Ernie linked and also a small folding chair.
I use them all the time and found they work well for terminating Ethernet and doing all the other laptop based work. I use them a lot more than I expected... it's nice to have a place for the laptop and folder where you can make calls and do paperwork. I feel a lot more productive and comfortable using them.
The chair fits in what was unused space between my parts keeper bin and the side of the van and the table folds up and tucks between the van partition wall and a bag with some Lutron demo gear.
I put some heavy duty rubber feet on the chair to keep from scratching floors.
You can see the table in the picture below all the way to the front behind the Lutron suitcase:[/img] [/img] [/img] [/img] [/img] [/img]

I have a couple of these Dewalt tables. They are very sturdy and stable and fold and unfold very easily in a couple of seconds. They say 1000 lbs, which I wouldn't try, but I've had 250-300 lbs on them several times with no issue. Definitely tough enough to do a lot of work on. [Link: homedepot.com]
