That about sums it up. We have Frontier FIOS, with only 100 Mbps internet and actual dial tone (not VoIP).

FWIW, speedtest.net just now says 12 ms, 103 down, 79 up.

The bill just went up 45% because the two year period is over. Ouch to the tune of $750 per year if I just sit still and take it.

Off to check on alternative services.... advice appreciated!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Fred has pretty much the ONLY advice in switching. WHO else is available in your area? That matters. Maybe no one? Maybe one? Maybe two. Then compare. Then approach your current provider and let them know you are moving, their speed sucks and your bill is too high. They may either care and attempt to remedy or they wont, then you move ISP's.

I don't think you can get internet and phone much cheaper than where you're at, (roughly $60 per month).  I switch between two different cable companies every couple of years, and I'm always between $60-$70 for internet at 100-120Mbps.

Guess you can pray for 5G?

I remember back when GM owned Hughes, I had a customer that worked for GM.  He told me that there long term goal was to get approximately $400 per month from every house they serviced.

I thought to myself...."that's ridiculous".  We're not far off....

Living with someone? My girlfriend and I take turns being "new customers" whenever the discounted rate goes up. You can also save money with the self install kit since the house is now wired for cable.

And people in this business are trying to find ways to obtain RMR for what? Your ISO can’t charge 60.00 a month for HSD&voice service, equipment, service calls. Hell even replace a bad cable or move one for little or no charge. Maybe not to your spec, but good for most people. I’m trying to see the problem you mention having.

Correction. $62.50/Month

I'd take 100Mb service and a phone line for $62.50 a month.

In my area I only have CableOne and Centurylink's DSL.
I'm sticking with CableOne. 300Gb per month data limits before they "upgrade" to a larger plan.
2 miles to the south Comcast offers much better and faster service with 1,000Gb of data for same price.

Like others said, you need to see what options you have in your area.
You know, location, location, location.

Don't forget to look at WISPs.

Me, too. We insisted on an actual phone line instead of a VoIP, but our two-year "deal" was the residence line for $48.10 and the internet for $61.49.

The new prices are $69.99 for the phone line and $99.99 for internet. The bill went from $138 to $201.

That's before the taxes and six bucks for who knows what.

Didn't a new state Net Neutrality law just get signed in your location. How is that affecting this?

"Only" 100Mbps? What are you doing that actually requires higher speed?

Call Customer Retention- they're the ones who can get this to a reasonable price but A) know what the competitors are offering and B) make them understand that you're willing to leave them- it costs less to keep customers than to set up new ones.

Time to get an OOMA and dump the phone line. Pay $4.00 or so per month for phone instead of $70.00 + taxes.

I've had OOMA for several years now, and it has been super reliable. As long as the internet service is up, I have a "land line" of sorts.

Ooma.

We wanted an actual phone line, the kind that stays on when the internet dies. "As long as the internet service is up" is not the kind we wanted.
