I've researched this and there seem to be several versions of CDs, and of course also of LPs. I'd like to finally buy the CD and get the right one the first time out.

Thanks for the help.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

For CD, apparently there was a really early pressing in the 80's that had some clipping, but I'm sure anything you buy now would be fine. If you can play it, the SACD is probably the best.

I might still have the 80's version with clipping

Thanks. I can create a demo of clipping if I need it.... !

We did a massive renovation of a large theater where the idiots who installed the first system allowed the interior desecrator to place the speakers behind actual real high quality velvet. We changed to grille-type cloth and made other major changes.

For the demo to the client once we were done, we were debating which helicopter crashes and such we'd use. It occurred to me that the client has heard that over and over, and let's start with something beautiful instead. The choir intro to that recording is what we used, at about 85 dB, and after two minutes the client said "Well, now I see I've got to improve the video, too."

That wasn't my CD but I've always wanted to have it, yet spent zero energy on it. Thanks for letting me know about the versions.

Most of those recordings from 1812 sound about the same
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Something about the production code on the CD being "DIDZ" is the early clipped version, and "DIDX" is OK.

Actually, the CD we used in that demo had a chorus, and I didn't see any reference to a chorus in the listings for the original CD. But another version was done in 2001:
The new version contains all the components of the old one (orchestra, bells, cannons) but it also includes the Kiev Symphony Chorus, who, in an unusual move, sing the Russian folk song that begins the Overture, usually played by the orchestra. The Kiev choristers return -- along with everything else -- in the climactic battle scene, making for an 1812 of exceptional splendor.

The thing that got us that other job was the lush sound of the chorus, completely enveloping the listener. It's a bit weird that just as the orchestra is about to come in, the choir collapses slowly from surrounding the listener to being in front of the listener, but it sure as hell is an impressive recording!

We could have used helicopter crashes, but that wouldn't have been as good as this beautiful sound.

If it takes too long to find the one you want, maybe The Firebird Suite on Telarc would be a good alternative.

Thanks.

Edit: Found it. The key was looking for the recording with the chorus. Ordered it.

And I know you're trying to help, but again, the mode of thinking amazes me: if I'm looking for a particular recording of a particular thing, and it turns out there are MANY recordings of the same thing to choose from if I can't find that particular one, why would I first opt to choose different music?
