We are not a C4 dealer, but I’ve talked with them a few times. If a dealer is terminated for some reason, including not meeting their quotas, C4 keeps all of the clients. This is much too risky for me.

Then don’t suck as a dealer, it’s not that hard!

I was with a company about 5-6 years ago that took on C4 for the lower end jobs.  Their products had so many issues (that C4 admitted to at the time so don't get your undies in a bunch) so we dropped them after less than 2 years.  We could no longer support the 60+ clients that we had done work for because we no longer had access to the software.  We had to refer our clients to other C4 dealers or directly to C4 themselves.

I get this is how they do it but I will never support a company that operates like this.

If you own a GMC car are you GMC s client or the dealer you bought the car from?

You could be either, it depends on who you show loyalty too. Even if the GMC dealer lost their dealership, you could still bring it their for service if you wanted too.

Either? Or Both?

If I buy something from a dealer key word being a dealer here. I am a client of both the dealer and the manufacturer if the dealer goes out of business as a client do I not have a resonabke expectation of support from the manufacture even if that is through another dealer?

Control4 Crestron savant they don’t “keep” clients the clients are already theirs. Through their dealers.

I think many dealers don’t actually read their dealer contracts close enough

I disagree that the client is already "theirs".  I've had many clients over the years where a control system was pulled out and replaced with another brand.  How many control companies actually shut down the software like C4?

A good client will stick with you regardless of what control system you work with because they trust you, not some black box with a name on it.
