It’s a business expense, so you can write off the dues

It’s to make your man bits feel larger and your wallet smaller! You also get to walk around the show floor with a fancy ribbon that says your a member.

I feel cheated.

Never got to wear a fancy ribbon.

Did almost get run over by some ass on a Segway though.

There is exactly one benefit for me, and I think it’s huge: the ability to get certification as a Registered Outreach Instructor. This has gotten me so many more relationships with architects and designers, who have then brought me into so many more projects than I was able to get into before.

Used to have meaning WITHIN the industry, not so much anymore.
Never meant anything to clients, builders, etc.
I have three of their certificates hanging on my wall, probably could just downloaded them from the web these days for all the meaning they have.

In the early days I learned a lot in the classes and training's, never felt the unity they tried to foster, dealers were so territorial back then, you're going to steal my trade secret.

Being a member of ProSource on the other hand, is priceless. Maybe not from the consumer's view, but certainly from a business aspect.

That's funny right there. What would you pay to see him drive right off the front of that stage!

I have a theory about him and his stupid Segway.    He only uses it because it makes him look taller than he actually is.  When they crop the Segway out of the photo, he doesn't look like a munchkin.

What are the benefits of becoming a cedia acredaitted dealer / installer ?

Primary benefits are...

1. Classes. There are no schools that teach what we do. Most of the classes are specifically tailored to us. As an example i went to a non CEDIA affiliated 3 day networking class last year. The instructor spent 3 days talking about the theory of ethernet and other nonsense that i will never need or care about. I thought i was going to learn how to configure a managed switch. I don't always need or want to know all the whys i just need to know the hows.

2. Contacts. Networking with industry people. People like to do business with people they know. Even the after parties give you direct access to manufacturers and other professionals. We have projects all around the country. We couldn't pull that off without the people we have met on the forums and at CEDIA.

I’ve yet to see it as a prerequisite by a client , distributor or a brand

I don't think you ever will. But...if you were ever to find yourself in the job market you will see plenty of job postings with "CEDIA Certifications a plus". If your a business owner you can leverage these classes as a bonus. What employee wouldn't want to add certificates to their resume?

I think you will find that it fluctuates. I have been to CEDIA many times and taken many classes but its not a thing we do every year. We went ten years without going once. I think its been 3 since i went last.

You might ask the question.... "Have the majority of pro installers at one time, been CEDIA memebers?"

I've seen this question asked over at least a dozen years with only empty or negative responses. At least a couple of the responses here make sense!

This, all by itself, is a wonderful sentence:

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

My favorite reference that I’ve ever seen was someone on either this forum or the other one once called it his rich man legs.

I worked for him and it was the worst job I've ever had. He's an asshole through and through. When I worked for him I had never seen staff turnover like it was at Monster Cable. I seem to remember a good dozen people that quit within the their first month.
