I get that it's compression. I just wish they were more open about the fact it's still just 10gig hdbaset. I have spoken with several smart technicians who believe it's actually an 18gig bandwidth, mostly because they say that it is.
You just answered the question about why they do it. Because someone will buy it.
Reminds me of a conversation with a really stupid customer once. I was called out on a service call to diagnose why the picture on the TV would cut in & out. The equipment was in a closet 40' away from the TV. Customer had ran a cheap 50' generic HDMI cable he got from ebay for like $20 or something.
When I said the crap cable could not send a signal 50', he argued till he was blue in the face that it would. His exact words "Why would they build it if it wouldn't work". My instant reply [exact words] "Well, you bought it didn't you!"
