This is so frustrating. A client called me 3 weeks ago to troubleshoot HDCP error on 2 of his 3 TVs. All centrally located equipment using HDBASET extenders (key digital) marantz AVRs. Spent 3 hours dealing with it and got one to finally work again but ended up replacing it. Normal trouble shooting procedures, power down 15 minutes- cable swap- factory resets-firmware blah blah blah.

Another client emailed me saying they are getting HDCP error and they have a similar setup except binary HDBASET. Same ordeal, swap them around, do the above procedures and still get them. Both of these jobs have been running fine since 2015. First job has Sony TVs and one LG and 2nd job had Samsung-Sony-LG and all throwing the code. 2nd job had client provided Yamaha advantage’s.

The only thing that was the same on these jobs were Roku 3s....is Roku killing them? The funny thing is we sat down tonight to watch something on ours and it threw the code! You guessed it, Roku 3! (I have Sony tv and marantz preamp)

All HDMIs are ethereal. Swapped them with chePos and newer ethereals and nothing changed on any of my jobs/house....

Welcome to the shittard world we live in. The world of making less than chick-fil-a assistant managers because of EVERY-SINGLE source manufacturer. I digress. We have found it's cheaper, if it's relatively an older job, to just say the newer models of (fill in the blank) have the 2.1 flux-capacitor and the picture will be better. Or, spend precious time figuring out the issue only for some TV firmware to break what you've solved 3 days later. AV = the most idiotic career ever -- yet I can't let go...

I would have to look at my notes but there are now a couple of Roku models to stay away from because they have known issues with no fix. The Roku 3 maybe one of them as I know I have none of those installed for clients (Roku 4 was one to stay away from).
Considering how cheap the boxes are, the best fix for these is just to replace the box with the newest model. The Roku Ultra is only $99 and has all the latest bells & whistles with no issues other than the possible double IR command problem. Price of a service call or less.

Have you called me?
Sounds a lot like the issue that we are seeing with DirecTV.
Give me a call tomorrow.

Roku Ultras have been the worst offender for us... hdcp errors like crazy on 4k tv's

I’ve been through this drill with an Ulltimate. There is a Samsung TV, Optoma Projector, Sony receiver and Blu-ray and a couple computer A/V connections. I went through CEC, fixing video resolutions, reducing resolutions, auto resolutions, using only one display at a time, pulling an HDMI cable for a second, and combinations that I’ve forgotten. The picture might display for seconds or minutes, but then “error”. Finally, I settled on fixed resolutions without 4K scaling, then rebooted the Ultimate. The system has been stable for a few weeks. At this point I’m guessing that rebooting the Ultimate after a change was the magic bulletin, but I’m not feeling all warm and fuzzy.

Edit: spelling

Was it the 1st gen Ultra or 2nd gen? They made a running change and called it the same device. The 1st gen has an optical audio output on it, the 2nd gen does not.

The newer Ultra's have been the offender for us. On my last one, I had a cable box and a Roku hooked straight to the TV with 2 different brands of cables. Flipped the cables and presto. The cable box has been fine since too.  This is what our error read with useless instructions:

Do the latest Apple TVs have this problem too?

After telling people forever that TVs streaming Netflix is the WRONG way to do it, we may go back in that direction. NO!

Roku4 has been almost trouble free for me. Small handful of customers get an audio delay on Amazon, but that is it. If it is an older non-4K system, or I need analog audio out, the still sometimes available Roku 1/SE has never given a hint of a problem.

The new Apple TVs have too many issues of their own. Again, an earlier version of Apple TV on a non-4K system is a pretty trouble free experience.

Streaming will have you screaming...
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

I've been through a similar fire drill with an ultimate. Nothing made much sense. Finally I rebooted everything and the problem went away.

Sad but true!!

I would like working with AV if I could stand all of the BS that comes with video. I really, really like working with audio- I did a school gym audio update and it was like a breath of fresh air- no video involved, whatsoever.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."
