Charter/Spectrum is being kicked out of New York.

Enjoy the service calls.

Do you really think they will be kicked out? I say in the end that will be too disruptive to citizens and both sides (especially spectrum) will miraculously find a fix

This was my thought. What happens if Charter flips the switch and walks out? Obviously, service will stop, but what happens to the infrastructure? Will current employees hang around to help a takeover company? Will a takeover company walk into a dark building? Could there be any sabotage?

NY claimed that the internet speed was lower than stated- they say it can be UP TO 100Mbps (or other speed)- that doesn't mean it WILL be 100Mbps.

I was wondering the same thing and found this:"
Charter Communications has vowed to stay in New York. It is the largest cable company in the state providing service to 2 million customers.

The commission has given them six months to stop operating service for customers is not expected to be interrupted.

Charter was told it has 60 days to file a plan to ensure an orderly transition to another provider."

I had the same problem here in So Cal a couple of years ago -- speed wasn't up to snuff but all I could get the customer service turkey to say to me was that speeds would be UP TO so and so... I finally got it across by saying, look, I'm going to give you half of the money in my pocket. I have up to six billion dollars. Now, the fact is, I have 17 bucks, but that is included in "up to six billion dollars." So you're gonna want to know just how many bucks I have in my pocket. WHAT IS THE SPEED that you GUARANTEE?

But the news reports I've read have said that Charter has just plain lied anyway. I've always wondered if one of these government-approved monopolies would ever be so freakin' outrageous that they'd get punted. I guess we'll see.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I would love to see them flip the off switch. Set some consumers straight. Speeds are up to in the advertisements. Perhaps the should get out of wireless and leave part to the customer. Most speed issues are wireless related and test by the customer on those crappy speed test sites.

Really? I'm not sure if you have ever been to NY before. But people I know from up there complain the internet is the worst in the country. They say it is so slow and unreliable, there is no point to even pay for it. One of those families is from upstate, the other from in NYC.

Yes really. You can find someone complaining if not thousands about anything and everything.

Without running large, well structured tests, it would be difficult to justify blanket statements about speed and reliability.

As an anecdotal observation, I'm in a Comcast and FIOS area. At the store we have Comcast in an inner city area and there are several outages per year. I can't comment about speed because we have a lower tier of service. At my suburban home I have FIOS and it has been years between outages. In terms of customer complaints we have more complaints from our Comcast users, but the overwhelming majority of our customers use Comcast. We had one customer switch from FIOS to Comcast, but many have switched or are itching to switch to FIOS. The single switch to Comcast was an elderly gentleman who had Comcast at the shore and couldn't deal with the differences in the FIOS cable box interface at home.

I have several customers who use Spectrum- their service and customer service has improved, although there were many calls with Time Warner that went extremely well because the person on their end had the required training and was willing to do their job of satisfying a customer. Several of the tests I have performed showed speeds in excess of their stated number, which is better than I thought I would see at that time of day.

I think their service really depends on location, demand and age of infrastructure.

OK, but Spectrum and ATT both use Ookla and it's common to see the wireless speed at about half of the wired speed when the customer went out and popped for a cheap router or in some cases, say "I know what I'm doing" when network setup is offered.

They may have customers use it. Probably a bad idea. The techs do not. They use a multi thousand dollar Viavi ONX meter to do all ref and network test. They do not rely on sites such as ookla.

I have a 150/150Mbs FIOS line. Using online tests I can come close to the 150, sometimes. The FIOS installer's test reported 150/150 exactly. A quickie test just now gave an unusually high 164.34/126.92 using speedof.me. This is for a wired connection and results vary depending on processor and network load. The network was otherwise quiet during the test.

Just for grins, the results for an iPad are 64.27/83.7. A Ubiquiti IW access point is in the next room, slightly down the hall and around the corner.
