I have a system with multiple sources into an 8x8 matrix with audio de-embedding via SPDIF on each of the outputs.

We did an upgrade on the house system about 10 months ago and the audio for the master bedroom zone is currently managed by an old Denon 3805 which is basically just stripping the audio from the HDMI and sending it via pre-outs to a pair of Genelec 6020As.

The Denon is getting on and is occasionally dropping off the LAN which results in occasional "no power-up" situations. Switch it on manually and it'll work fine for a few more months/weeks, until it craps the bed again.

My plan now, is to take the SPDIF audio from the matrix and decode it to send to the Genelecs, so I'm investigating options OTHER THAN sticking another AVR in there. All I really need is basically a 2-channel DAC with a volume control that can be controlled via IP (or reliably with discretes via IR) from Control4. Can't seem to find many options out there.

Does anybody know if any such thing exists? Or should I just say "Hang-it" and find an entry level AVR with pre-outs that can do the same job?

Any suggestions appreciated. :)

Robbie.

It's the earlier version of this.

The current one has volume control, but only on the analogue.

Mine has no analogue out, so no volume control.

Sad days, indeed. :(

Ouch! Is the HDMI that is being used on the Denon still available??

You could always use something like this, which will de-embed the HDMI audio to stereo analog output and does have volume control.

I've never come across, or even searched for, a DAC will volume control. Maybe a unicorn....

knob level controls on the back of the unit. Nothing controlled by a driver other than a relay for power ON/OFF for whole unit or individual zones.

It is a great piece though.

Definitely this. One of the best quality Dacs you can find with full IP control. you dont need the amp obviously, but its still going to be cheaper than most other options.

check out the yamaha WXC-50, could do exactly what you want and also add a local bluetooth/airplay/spotify connect input. Not sure if it has control 4 but mine works great with Harmony.

Thanks for your responses everybody. Some really good options in there.

I hadn't thought of the Traid One as an option, mainly due to the amplification, but it does make a lot of sense. It does have a great DAC and will work perfectly, hand in hand with C4, obviously. Much better option than a mostly redundant AVR.

I'll recommend it to him today.

Thanks again. :)
