I’ve come to trust the feedback of this group on about any topic, so I’ve got a bit of a different one, even for OT topics. My son has won the Dutch oven competition the last two years at a Cub Scout weekend camp that’s in the fall. This year will be his final year in cub scouts, and he wants to make it number three. Since last fall I’ve been searching for a new recipe for him. I realized today that the way our summer is going, there aren’t many weekends left where he can try out something new. It needs to be something that can be prepped and cooked in an hour and a half. Anyone have anything?

Aside from Chili, stews and cobbler, what has he cooked in it, so far? Is he putting embers on the top, or just hanging it over the fire?

Here's a link for some recipes- if it was Winter, I think the Chicken & Dumplings would be good. Last time I made that, the dumplings could have been used as weapons.

What are we looking for Fins a main course?  I do a lot of cooking at camp with my Mountain Man grill and a dutch oven.  For kids, the first thing that comes to mind is monkey bread or an apple crumble/crisp because they're easy, and friggin' delicious, and they make the whole area smell like a carnival.

You can never go wrong with a good chili, but I think that would be obvious so everyone would be doing it.

He could do a nice macaroni and cheese...?

I'm trying to think like a kid....If it were me, I'm killing an animal and putting it in the pot, but you know how these damn kids are...

The first year he made Mexican lasagna. It used tortilla shells instead of noodles and taco seasoning in the meat. Last year he made chuck wagon casserole which is really a bumper up chili (I think it had corn added in) with cornbread on top.

It really can be anything. Breakfast, main course, dessert, whatever. I think one thing that helped him last year was the recipe required him to do some knife work cutting up onions and peppers instead of just opening cans and dumping stuff in.

Oh, if my son had his way, he would be killing something and cleaning it and cooking it up too. But the time frame makes that kind of tough

Is he allowed to possibly use a dutch oven and a skillet or grill?

If so, I'd do sausage and peppers.  Use the dutch over to boil the spaghetti noodles.

He could cut up the sausage & peppers & onions & garlic to show off his knife skills.   Throw all of that in a skillet and let the magic happen.  Even if he burns any of those 3 it's still going to taste delicious.

Boil the spaghetti noodles in the dutch oven.  Once done, pull them and actually make a sauce...(1 can of tomato paste, 2 cans of tomato sauce + 1-2 cans of tomato sauce filed with water.)  and italian spice...Let that simmer...once the sausage, peppers are cooked, just drop them in the sauce and let the flavors mix.

I would kick those cubscouts asses...Should I show up?  What's the prize money?  LOL

The prize is mainly bragging rights. Last year he did get a really nice charcoal chimney. And the year before a kid lifter. Prizes depend a lot on what is in stock at the camp trading post.

The idea of a pasta dish has a pretty good appeal to it.

That's what I was thinking...most kids like spaghetti....He's making his own sauce, cutting the sausage and vegetables...And it's out of the ordinary.....Nobody is going to expect it...

Then he drops the mic on those little punks and walks out with the trophy...

Does he have to make enough for everybody or just a few judges?  I'm fully vested in him winning this.  You know how I like to cook with fire.

A small little block of parmesan that he whips out his sharp pocket knife and shaves some  parmessan onto  the top of the plate would put him over the top.

I'm not too proud to admit I have Paula Dean's peach cobbler recipe...and it's ridiculous.

I have to admit the only "exit plan" from the business I have now is a food truck that specializes in breakfast any time of the day (for breweries etc). So I make a lot of skillets on the weekends. I use two pans, so you'd have to figure that out. I do hash browns in one, some form of meat in the other. Finish the meat, add the eggs, then throw it all together. It's pretty great most of the time, and not that difficult.

Otherwise I did have an awesome pork last year that was made with onions, apples and carraway seeds - and it was awesome! rustic too. I'm not sure you could pull that off in an hour or two though...
